I believe we are on our 5th or 6th baby monitor since our first child was born less then 3 years ago. I HATE them and I don't understand why no one can make a good one. Why, for example, do they insist on having the cover to the battery pack fastened with screws? Do they not realize that parents are changing the batteries on these things at least twice/week with rechargeables? Do they think we want to get a screwdriver out everytime we need to change the batteries!?

Also, the volume dial--it is useless without numbers printed on it or some indication so that we know how loud the volume is set. 99% of the time, the baby monitor is basically silent (hopefully). So if we can't hear anything, we don't know if it is set high enough or too high until it is too late. Print numbers or something on the dial so we know how loud it should be!

Can someone please recommend a monitor that you have been happy with? I'd be very happy to spend a lot of money on one, so long as it works properly. Considering that you use a monitor mulitple times a day, it should be reliable and if I have to spend a lot to get that, I'll do it. Thanks in advance!

Having gone through several, we're happy with a Graco unit from Target. It was about $90 as I recall. I don't have the model # handy but it came with one base unit and two remotes. We don't walk around with the remotes but keep them in the charging cradles. The volume is controlled by push buttons on the receivers with an LED display showing the setting. If either remote loses the signal from the base, an LED turns red and it starts beeping loudly. We keep one remote in the kitchen/family room and the other next to our bed, so after our daughter is put to bed we're in hearing range of one at all times. We're satisfied with it.
