I have always gotten mine to school early and now one of mine drives and leaves for school at 7:20- Our neighbor ,on the other hand, always took her child at the last minute- husband leaves for work around 9:00 and now that child drives and she leaves at like 7:40 after her parents have told her to leave by 7:30. guess it depends on what you are used to!!!
Lots of people get their kids to school late on a regular basis. As a teacher, this drives me crazy because it starts the day off in a less than optimal way for everyone concerned. Habitual tardiness has a negative impact on a child's education, shows a lack of respect, does not provide a good example, and puts the child in an awkward position - everyone else is working and they walk in and are completely clueless. I feel sorry for these kids.

I dated a Gal for awhile who was habitually late for us meeting ; sometimes what we were going to participate in had already started as much as 40 minutes into it. I confronted her in a nice way ...and she honestly didnt see the problem in being late ! It immediately told me she was inconsiderate , probably self absorbed , and undisciplined . It became time to say 'Asta la Vista mi corazon' !

Doesn't always work out that way...
For 12 years (including preschool) I got my youngest to school
at least 10 minutes early and we had organized relaxed mornings.
Now that he drives he leaves late and arrives late and I have to
keep a close eye on his timing.
ADD will wreck havok on planning/timing.
I've had trouble getting to school on time since I was in KG.
Sadly, it's grown up to this day, I'm late to the office most of the time.
No matter what I do or how hard I try, I still clock in 9:00 ish and NOT 9:00
I think it has to do with the way people see time. Some people live by the clock and everything they do is by the clock. They always clock in on time, clock out on time, they go to lunch precisely at a time.
Other people live somewhat off the clock. They aren't as clock-bound, they often try to squeeze in one or two more errands before work. The people who are most willing to stay late to help out are usually the same ones who may have walked in 5 minutes late because they are less pressured by the clock on the other end of the work day also.
As a society we're very by the clock - but other societies are less pressured and less into time.
It's a form of disrespect. School doesn't start at "8:30-ish", it starts at 8:30am.
Elementary students that are habitually tardy typically also have the parents that "didn't have enough notice" to donate to the class basket for the annual fundraiser (4 weeks, 1-2 notes/emails per week asking for $2) or "didn't have enough time" to get to homework or were "never told" some vital piece of information.
My cousin is a teacher in AZ. They have parent/teacher conferences twice a year, scheduled in 20 minute time slots with 10 minutes in between for leeway. Habitually late student's parents get assigned the late slots in the fall - they are given a choice of days and 3 time "blocks". The parents who are late to their fall conferences, get assigned the last appointments of the day in the spring. Sometimes, because of inconsiderate, late parents, the conferences can run as much as 45 minutes to 2 hours late by the end of the day! She puts this in the syllabus that all the parents are supposed to read and sign the first week of school. I think it's the greatest thing ever! What satisfaction it must bring her everytime one of those parents claim that they were "never informed" and she can pull out the paper with their signature on it!
It's funny how someone who doesn't value other people's time and/or schedules can complain when they have to wait an additional 1 1/2 hours because of someone else. Of course, few do - wait, that is. They typically storm off and complain to everyone else about the teacher's lack of consideration. One started yelling about how she needed to get to work and my cousin should be fired too.
At her school, if you don't go to the conference, you have to pick up your child's report card from the principal. Due to constant interruptions, the principal is always running behind, at least 30 minutes. If a parent is late, she won't interrupt her schedule either - less than 10 minutes, she allows them the remainder of their scheduled time but more than 10 minutes and you have to reschedule. If you do not pick up your child's report card within a week, it is sent to the district. I only know of it going that far once.
I have my kids on a strict schedule to get them to school on time. Up at 6 am. Not 6:05, 6 am. Breakfast is until 6:30. Breakfast is *over* at 6:30, whether they have finished or not. Brushing teeth and dressing until 6:40. If they are not dressed by 6:40, I dress them in what I choose. They don't like not being able to choose their clothes, so they are usually dress on time. And then 5 minutes to get coats and lunches and they are ready to go.
I give five minute warnings at every stage. Five minutes to finish breakfast. Five minutes to finish getting dressed. Five minutes till I leave.
Hmm reading that makes me sound a bit like a slave driver.
