We got three large bags in Sam's Club yesterday, which is I think 500 pieces for about 20 dollars, plus over the last month or so we tried some new candies for ourselves which we didn't all like (such as individual toffee snickers bars, sugarfree Jolly Ranchers) and are adding those. We also got some small tubs of silly putty and giant twizzle sticks for "good costume" prizes. Candy is more expensive but I love Halloween, and we spent about as mcuh money as we would on a lunch out, or two horus of babysitting, so not that much.
Last year we had 692 trick-or-treaters not counting accompanying adults, but I think it will be less this year as the local college football team has a game on

No, why would I be kidding? People are unemployed and barely eating. If you get a lot of trick or treaters, chocolate at $7 or $8 a bag adds up. We don't get the odd Trick or Treater...we get over 100-200 kids.
That's why we bought a mixture of stuff. I would not just turn off the porch light and pretend not to be home. We like to give out candy. It just seems more people are complaining about the cost this year, especially for the good stuff like mini Hersheys and chocolate in general.
I've gotten several reps for this thread, by the way! People are just speaking out against high prices, that's all. I don't know why people can't get their heads around the fact some people don't have a lot of extra money at holiday time.

Well, check your candy, folks. I bet most of the cheaper variety are made in China.
Like everyone else, I saw that this year candy was a lot more expensive. When I got it home I noticed emblazoned on the back of some of the packages were "Made in USA". They were the more spendy packages. If I have to pay 6,7, or even 8 dollars for candy with that kind of assurance, I will do it.
"HOWEVER", I can afford to spend that much because we only get about ten +/- kids showing up. If I got as many as GypsySoul, it would certainly give me pause. As she said, it adds up very quickly.
HAPPY and SAFE HALLOWEEN ~

I thought the candy seemed expensive too. $10/bag in some cases! I did get all chocolate because I don't like the other stuff. Paying that much for candy to give away is one of those things I don't want to do, but feel like I have to. We have a ton of kids in our neighborhood, and could easily run out if we don't get a lot. I think I bought 5 or 6 bags.

Hell, I'm hoping that you bring up that, right around Thanksgiving, stores are going to charge almost 4 bucks for a pound of fresh green beans that look like they have been sitting there for 3 weeks.

FYI I just got back from Nob Hill/Rayley's and all their Halloween candy is 50% off already. It pays to wait until the last minute

DD bought Halloween themed pencils to hand out this year. I only buy candy that we will enjoy also as there is always leftovers. Tootsie Roll Pops and the mini bags of skittles is what we are handing out. We only had 5 lkids last year. So many people go to church parties or the big thing here is Trunk or Treat. Cars park in a circle at a school or church parking lot, raise their trunk lids, the kids go from car to car trick or treating.

I bought eight bags of candy (ONLY chocolate - reeses, hersheys, milky ways and three muskateers) on halloween, five bucks a bag. Didn't seem too pricey to me - we went through almost all of it, not much left over for the pregnant lady
