I was going to say a ride on, push toy or wagon. These are typically more than casual friends will spend to get and they are forever "special" in the toy department. Some of the new ride on toys are also convertible to be pushed as well and have other toys built onto them for them to play with. My kids LOVED their ride on toys. And wagons are fun. All of the grandkids got a wagon from my parents for their 1st birthdays and my dad would be outside pulling them non stop and all of the kids there had to ride with "grandad" pulling them. And the wagon can come in handy for trips to the zoo, walking around the block, etc. Oh, and some ride on toys even have removable handles for you to push them while they ride on it.

ride on toys are the best they have one where it has peddels and also a push handle so until he learns how to peddle himself which will be a long time you can have tons of time bonding with him as you push him along on walks... just have a fun day with your little boy and take tons of silly pics with him build up the memories.

All great ideas!

I'm also for the college $$, but yeah, it's not exactly a Kodak moment. A Kodak moment that I do love is when people take a picture of their kid every year on the same chair or with the same prop (Daddy's recliner, a big inflatable cupcake, etc.) I also remember seeing a kid wearing a tie (and nothing else but a diaper for the first pic.) That was cute! It's amazing how fast they grow.

Definitely give him a special baby cake!

Maybe start a collection of something? My relatives did two of these for me: Breyer horses (which I loved, love, and enjoy watching my kids play with) and Madame Alexander dolls (which were too delicate to play with and of no interest to me.) We bought my son two Hess trucks every year until this year... one to play with and one to keep... hopefully they'll hold up.

And while the $$ is boring to a one year old, one of the BEST hits for that age group is a cheap velcro wallet with expired credit card and other "junk" cards in it.

Elefun is also a game that is hugely popular at that age.

Lastly, what about a personalized wooden puzzle, truck, chair?

Congratulations! And happy birthday to him.

My favorite gift to give all the 1 year olds that we know (and in the future) is a puzzle name stool, such as those made by Damhorst Toys or others. The parents LOVE them and apparently the stools see good use as not only toys and learning tools, but actual stools all the way until adulthood.

We got ours a car. First you push him in it. When he gets bigger the bottom comes out and he can scoot around himself. I can't even remember what we got kid #2! Putting some money away for later is a good idea too.

Use it as an excuse to buy whatever you ever wanted.

Model train set with all the attachments.
Radio controlled plane.
A new sports car.
A new set of golf clubs (only the best qualities will do for your son)
Perhaps a canoe or a yacht.
Harley (If you have to ask, you would'nt understand)
