My son (I'm dad) is turning 1 this week and I want to get him something special. I know he's not going to remember it or care about now but I still want it to be something special. Any ideas?
Get him a silver or pewter engraved baby cup and let him use it -- making all the nicks and scratches on it that he wants.
I still have my silver baby cup with my name engraved on it. It's the only thing that survived my childhood. (My Southern godparents -- Andy and Beulah -- gave it to me.)
Pottery Barn Kids sells a pewter one, but it doesn't look easy to drink out of.
There are "Things Remembered" stores in Raleigh and Cary that offer $30 baby cups.
You can always start or add to that college fund when he's 2. Even if he isn't interested in it when he's grown, the cup will always bring a smile to your face when you think of him using it. (Take photos!)

He will never remember the first few years no matter how much you hope he might...give the gift that keeps on giving...savings $$ and as he gets older (starting around 5 to 6) teach him how to save his money for the things he wants in life. I got my first savings account around 7 yrs old--I couldn't even see over the counter at the bank. Best gift / life lesson I learned ever. Save your $$$ and don't run up credit.
As for the day of his Bday, he'll be thrilled just to rip some bright paper and play with your tupperware! Yes, seriously. Bdays 1 - 2 are really just for the parents anyway. The kid has no clue what's going on.
Another for the savings account option. Or actually, savings bond (bought on a deep discount, set to mature at x amount of dollars).
My daughter (now 15 months) had the best time playing with the boxes her presents came in. The gifts held her amusement for all of 2 minutes.
The best gifts that we got were bonds and an actual stock certificate (we'll see of the latter is ever worth anything given the market, ha, ha).
BUT, I do say go ahead, throw a party, snap pictures, and celebrate that you made it through the first year. Will be cool to look back at the pics when your son is older. Make sure to get a smash cake too. But as previously said, the first party is more for you, and the kiddo will never remember it.
My son turned 1 last year, so I know where you're coming from. Savings accounts are pragmatic, but you want to see his eyes light up, right?
To be honest, I can't remember what we gave him--his birthday is a couple of weeks before Christmas, so everything blurs together.
But, my sister bought him a toy lawnmower, which he still loves. Also, ride-on toys are fun for that age--the kind he just has to scoot, not pedal.
Strip him down to his diaper and give him an entire chocolate cake to attack, and take pictures. Thats the first time my kids ever got chocolate or any kind of treat really and it was funny and kind of scary at the same time.
At that age, the birthday parties and gifts are for YOUR enjoyment and satisfaction. The best gift will be just spending time with your son. Maybe a trip to the zoo or kids museum.
A pretty red wagon that you can pull him in and by next year he will be
able to pull. He'll enjoy it a long time and then you can keep it for his kids.
Ride-on or push toy! When a young sprout is just getting mobile, it's a joy to watch his face light up as he maneuvers himself around on his own two feet. Take lots of photos.
