OMG...OMG...OMG!

Last I checked, the bathrooms in most schools have individual stalls with doors in both the boys and girls facilities, so nobody's privacy is truly in jeopardy. Have you ever traveled outside the United States? You might be surprised to learn that all nations don't feel the need to provide separate facilities. Feel free to home school if it bothers you. School administrations have enough parents with pitchforks banging on their doors already.

Well, yes I have traveled outside the U.S. and used unisex facilities but they have been one room bathrooms in which one person enters at a time. This is not the situation in most public schools. I don't know why laws and social mores must be changed to make most Americans feel uncomfortable in order to accommodate the wishes of a very small minority of confused people. Why does the "comfort level" of the transgender group trump the "comfort level" of the vast majority?

In Colorado, the perverts won a victory in the name of transgenders also. Of course, the laws do not state "If you are a male who thinks you're a female, you may use a female bathroom". The law states that males may use a female bathroom IF THEY WISH. It does not say that they have to swear out an affadavit testifying that they think they're female. As is all other stupid laws, this is poorly executed. If this law in Maine passes, it will probably use the same language. Just another protection for NAMBLA members.

I am also sick of the "but in other countries" excuse/argument. This ISN'T other countries. This is America. In some other countries, young boys must pee over a stick to prove their virginity, women must wear long black veils, women with "female problems" are ostracized and some even have laws stating that it's not rape if she knows who you are.

And not to add to the "broken record", but if you don't like it in America, we do have an open door/exit policy. Please feel free to move to somewhere you'd feel more comfortable and stop trying to make HERE just like the countries so many others have worked so hard to escape from!

Excuse me? Please refrain from implying that I don't have a right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness here in the United States because I raise the point that other western countries provide unisex facilities. The open door policy applies to you, too.

They should add a third bathroom that has neither a male or female on the door but a ? to identify it as being for transgender students.

I could see where a transgender male might feel uncomfortable using the male bathroom as he/she may get harrassed or worse by the other males that are in the bathroom with him. Same probably goes for the transgender females. Adding a thrid bathroom similar to the family bathrooms that places like Wal-mart has would be a much better solution. Only one person at a time would be allowed to use it.

The biggest problem that I can see with allowing the opposite sex into a bathroom is that it won't just be transgender kids doing it. There is already enough kids of the opposite sex entering bathrooms for sex, and if a teacher saw a female student entering a male bathroom or visa versa they can pretty much conclude that it's probably to have sex. But now that the opposite sex can enter a bathroom makes it harder for people to know what the reason is for them to be in there.

Valid point.

Many schools have a single-stall bathroom for staff members. That would be a good alternative.

Well, when the bathrooms are gender separated, that just means that two males or two females can go in there with no raised eyebrows from staff to have sex.

We have mostly multi-stall bathrooms at our school. There is one single-room bathroom for student use (a couple more for staff use). Anyone uncomfortable with the multi-stall situation for any reason could use that.

That very well could be happening, but probably not as much as sex between opposite sexes in the bathrooms. But even if there was as many kids of the same sex having sex as those of the opposite sex, at least they wouldn't be at risk of unwanted pregnancies. They are all at risk for STDs no matter who they have sex with but it's only those who are having sex with the opposite sex who are at risk at becoming teen parents. Lord knows we already have to many teen parents and unwanted babies.

Our schools only have multi stall bathrooms for students and one or two single stalled bathrooms for teachers.
