So, I recently took my kids to a new pediatrician for check ups. During their check ups, my daughter stayed fully clothed the entire time and no "private" areas were examined (which is how check-ups have always been for her) but the doctor was much more through with my twelve year old son. She had him drop his shorts then had him "turn his head and cough". Additionally, she retracted his foreskin. To me, that seems a little bit much for a check-up for someone his age so I was just wondering if what she did was normal?

Sounds typical to me. Ours are circumcised, but I know that retraction is common during an exam at that age.

It's usually done very quickly and routinely.

Did the doctor talk to you first about it?

She just said to him something along the lines of "I need to take a quick peek at your penis and testicles. Can you please pull your boxers down for me?"

He obviously wasn't super thrilled about it but he said okay and took them off.

How do you know? I've done some research and just found lots of conflicting information.

How do I know what?

I have three boys, and what you described is a routine part of the exam at that age. We have two friends whose sons are uncircumcised and one mentioned this to me when it happened to them.

You can find whatever you want on the internet, but consider the source, as always.

So the doctor checked him for a hernia and made sure that his foreskin retracted properly. What's the concern?
