Default Red Lion PA relocation

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Red Lion area for the same reason as many. We need a larger living area for less money. The concern we have is less of a commute issue than of taxes.

We got an initial estimate today of property/school taxes of nearly $5500!? Is this accurate? This seems tremendous! I know that in MD our school taxes are in our state taxes and therefore a higher percent of our income.

Can anyone tell me how the taxes/income differ when you switch from MD to PA?

We pay significantly more in property tax in PA than in MD partly due to the separate school tax. During the year you will get a bill for your property tax, then another bill later on for the school tax. It is not included in the state tax here.

However, you will pay less income tax than in MD because PA taxes everyone the same amount regardless of your tax bracket. I believe it's 3%. If you still work in MD and your job will take out PA taxes just note that they will not automatically deduct the local PA taxes. I found this out when I filed my income taxes this year. You will have to compute that on your own and pay them on a quarterly basis. Go to York Adams Earned Income Tax Bureau for details on how to set this up.

Seems like all we do is pay taxes around here and I really don't see the benefits outside of the school system, which doesn't benefit me because I don't have any children.

Property owners have to pay school tax. It's TAX.

As i never rented in PA, not sure. But I don't think you pay school tax if you rent.

Part of your local wage tax is school tax. In many PA towns, there is a 1% (or more) local wage tax, which is usually split evenly between your town and the school district.

Renters do indirectly pay property (school, as well as county and city) tax, since the landlord will include his cost of the property tax in the rent cost. If property taxes go up, you can bet your rent will go up.

]You may need to look into a differnt school district. School districts set up there millage rates. some districts are higher then others. I am a Realtor with AllQuest but found a really cool tax millage calculator that rock Real Estate has posted on line. I refer to it sometimes when I need a quick millage rate:Millage Rates for York County, PA : ROCK Commercial Real Estate, York Pa, ROCK Commercial Real Estate Listings, ROCK Commercial Real Estate Agents, ROCK Real Estate
Let me know if you want some listing or have another question..
