I don't know, but it is entirely plausible that I would keep the house for awhile into the foreseeable---my son will most likely end up working in Washington, which is only an hour or so away and may end up as a professor at his own college later on...
|
My "wet blanket" tendencies are coming out. To be a college professor, it is generally necessary to have a PhD, which I am fairly sure Gettysburg doesn't offer. So he will have to leave for the duration. To get hired at a specific college is not a given; he may have to go to some other college to be a history professor. I would operate under the assumption that this will be a four year committment.

It doesnt matter to me what you think. I live the market every day, its not my goal to convert you to my way of thinking. I can only tell you how its worked for me and if you dont want to follow thats your decision. I stand my my statement that renting is for suckers and there is always someone who has to pay my mortgages for me. I bet you lease your cars also. There is always a sucker born every minute.

You think its wrong to state the truth? Im here typing to offer my help if you dont believe in what im saying or disagree then dont do what I say. Someone has to rent and someone has to be the rentor. I offered you a way to become the rentor you want to be the rentee what can I say. Captain obvious is the only one resorting to namecalling he called me a fool a couple posts ago. Its typical that if someone cannot respond intelligently they resort to namecalling.

Let's get back on topic. Something else to consider: mom of historybuff, your son may not like the college. It is not uncommon for students to transfer colleges after a year or two. My younger daughter is doing just that this fall. What looks good from the perspective of a high school senior is not always what is good for a college student. So, I would definitely go for the rental idea, at least until you are sure he is going to stay there the whole 4 yrs.

I think Pittnurse makes several excellent points. First one - let's get back on track here.
Another point - I know from the experiences of one of my nieces that "college hopping" is entirely possible. She went from West Virgnia to two or more different colleges in Pennsylvania until she finally found what she wanted. So if you're renting it will be easier to pick up and move along with your son.
On the other hand, I hope he loves Gettysburg and has a wonderful, fulfilling four years of college there. Gettysburg is a beautiful area and we take several day trips each year, and we try to get there for at least one camping weekend each year.

#1) quote the "fool" comment so we all can see it. It didn't happen.
#2) ALL my posts were full of logic and "intelligent responses". This is why I went, bullet point by bullet point, to show my reasoning for making the recommendations for renting in the short term. It is all in the posts and very clear.
#3) PLEASE CAN WE BE DONE? Pretty please? Pretty pretty please? With sugar on top?
#4) How's the OP's hunt in Gettysburg going? I'd like to know what she's found out there!

Thing your not remembering is she wanted to move the same area as her child and live there after he left for a job. Do you suggest she allow property values to increase without buying? Sounded like her son knew exactly what he wanted even what job he was going to try for after college. Most college students have given no real thought to life after school or even what their major might be. Sounds like this family is driven with a purpose. Gettysburg property values are increasing and if gambling goes in forget about buying affordably then she will have to rent and move after college. Already where I live a casino is going in Grantville and farm land is astronomical in price.
