Ok.... so i currently live in Queens NY....have 2 lil girls and am looking to relocate to PA!!!! I have done just enough research to know that we should keep out out PCP (even though the prices are awesome)
My husband will be commuting and knows his limit is a 2 hr drive
PLEASE SUGGEST ANY SAFE AND AFFORDABLE AREAS IN PA!!!!

What city is your husband working in? What is PCP?

PCP is "A Pocono Country Place". It is a gated community of roughly 10,000 residents that has a notorious reputation for crime. This member is one of a bazillion who has posted looking for that "easy commute" between NEPA and NYC. I couldn't even fathom stomaching a 2-hour commute each way. That's 20 hours per week spent sitting behind the wheel.

Stay out of Penn Estates too... FYI 2 hrs commute is less time than most people waste watching TV, on phone, and online per day. I've done the commute and works well if you are into podcasts and books on tape. Or take a class and do homework on the Martz bus to Port Authority (1.5 hours on the schedule but in traffic will actually put 1/2 hr on the trip, if an accident blocks Rt. 80 can be a 3+ hour trip). After about 3 to 5 years of it he will want to work in NJ. Hope his job allows him to be late if necessary and make up the time, the NJ Rt. 80 traffic can be inconsistent. Delaware Water Gap is closet to the border and will take less time for commute, west of Bartonsville and you will hit more PA Rt. 80 traffic to slow you down. Safety here is much better than NYC but some of the city has been brought out w/ the transplants (i.e. gangs mostly in the schools). Check out spotcrime(dot)com and familywatchdog(dot)com for stats. Another thing here is many of the food marts leave their produce out for sale until the very very very last minute, most things will have mold on them in 1 day once you bring them home, so shop at a high turn over store like Walmart or Weis. Also building codes were only enacted a couple of years ago here so if you buy an older home, beware.

Also, state income tax in PA is 3%, plus a local Berkheimer income tax of 1%. If you own property will pay both a property tax plus a school tax. My prop tax was just under 1000, but school tax almost 4000 per year.

There is an inheritance tax in PA starting at 4.5% (from spouse exempt) and an estate tax too. Sales tax is 6% (food, prescriptions and clothing exempt from this).
