So a few months back, I was driving from NJ, to Pittsburgh.

Along 76, my car basically broke down, near I-81. So I decided it would be best to pull off and check it out on a "backroad". By the time I was off the highway and already in the middle of nowhere, my car was running fine again, so I continued down the most eerie state route I have ever driven in my life, and passed through a few seemingly abandoned amish-like towns that looked like they belong in Diablo II.

Then I found myself in "Shippensburg". The most desolate plane of existence I have ever set foot upon.

And the kicker is, theres a university in this town... I've never been more creeped out in my entire life, across a panorama view of this town that has a UNIVERSITY, there was not a soul in sight, not even a light through a window.
The towns with populations of 5 that I seen along the way were scary enough, but this university town was supposed to have some sort of presence in civilization, yet even there, there was none to be found.

What the heck is up with that place, was there some sort of fatal catastrophic virus outbreak that occurred years ago and was never reported? and why would ANYONE want to attend school there?

Just wanted to share.

The main drag is sort of run down. Other than that it is a typical PA small town.

I have been to the town a couple times as I had a close friend attending college at Shippensburg.

Have not been to town since Fall 2008, but at that time, it had a nice main street, and seemed to be your typical college town in the middle of nowhere.

My wife and I visited there this past summer, on the weekend when they had civil war re enactments. The hotels, motels were full and a lot of participants were camped out. The University itself was pretty quiet, I don't know if they have summer classes or not. We enjoyed our vist but I wouldn't want to live there, it was too small town for us (and I like small towns).

CKY wrote called Shippensburg and since then I've been curious about the area. It's interesting to read a perspective from people who have been there. I've always wanted to visit but never have gotten around to it.

I think Shippensburg is a pretty typical middle of PA town. I know several kids who attend or graduated from Ship and they enjoyed their time there. I visited the college with my daughter several years ago and neither of us liked it much, but it wasn't horrible.
