The Cumberland Valley and Camp Hill school districts are known as the best in the area. Cumberland Valley includes Hampden, Silver Spring, Monroe and Middlesex township. There are a lot of single family homes, old and new in this area...and a lot of new suburban development. Housing prices are getting expensive here of course, because of the reputation of the school district. Camp Hill is an established suburb right outside Harrisburg with the best test scores in the area. It is very small however. Camp Hill is mostly made up of older single family homes, and they can be quite expensive as well. Cumberland Valley is a mega-school district with thousands of students while Camp Hill is only in the hundreds.

Other good school districts include Mechanicsburg, East Pennsboro, Central Dauphin and Susquehanna.

Dauphin County tops state in business retention, growth
11/15/2007 12:04:50 PM
Dauphin County leads all other counties in the state for business retention and growth, according to a three-year survey conducted by the Team Pennsylvania Business Retention and Expansion Program.

Economic development professionals conducted interviews at 475 local businesses. Results show that 80 percent of those interviewed projected sales growth within the next year, according to a statement from Dan Robinson, county director of economic development.

The county’s unemployment rate of 3.7 percent is the lowest in county history, Robinson said.

The county received the survey results yesterday, Robinson said. - Eric Veronikis

Harrisburg budget boosts police, not taxes
by JOHN LUCIEW / Of The Patriot-News, 11/27/07 8:44 PM EST
UPDATED: 11/28/07 8:15 AM EST

The number of Harrisburg police officers would grow, but property taxes wouldn’t increase under a 2008 budget unveiled Tuesday night by Mayor Stephen R. Reed.

The idea of opening a restaurant two years ago at the corner of South Third and Chestnut streets in Harrisburg was laughable.

Bazooka Joe is on a distinguished road
Please forgive me for redirecting you to another thread on this forum, but I was hoping more people might be able to respond and help me out (I just got to Harrisburg on North 6th Street from NYC on Friday!) if I made it easier to find. It's in regards to 50's/ 60's/ 70's area nightclubs, bars or restaurants. Thanks!

Here is an article regarding some of the unique retail in and around Harrisburg's Market Square (where 2nd and Market streets meet, right in the middle of the CBD).

Downtown Harrisburg. Folks wait for the bus holding black-and-red Sneaker Villa shopping bags. Visitors flow out of the Hilton. State workers migrate in packs to their office clusters. Heat from the ovens of Mama's Pizza flows onto the sidewalk. Energetic kids jump out of buses for a day trip to the Whitaker Center.
