I liked the Broad St Market where I had far too much to eat before buying some fresh produce and waddling back downtown. what really got me thinking, though, was when I read about an 18 story office building and, perhaps more importantly, the governors' sq development. specifically, how affordable it seems to be to live there and get what appears to be a reasonably vibrant city. I figured you must not have the extreme high cost of construction that Philadelphia has (which is the real reason it's so expensive). another thing that piqued my interest was the land value taxation. Still, it's 95 to 105 min by train to Philly. If they could lop off another 15 min that would make the decision easier. the other place I hope to look at is Pittsburgh.
Thanks for the good comments!

Business News for the Central Pennsylvania region including the Harrisburg, York and Lancaster areas - CentralPennBusiness.com
Here's a recent article about a trio of real estate investors who purchased an abandoned building in Midtown Harrisburg and are converting it into an artist space, theater, spa and restaurant.

One snowy day in early 2006, John Traynor and his business partners discovered Harrisburg. The New York City residents were in search of a good meal during their drive home from Pittsburgh. They turned off the highway and followed signs into the city.

"There was something that attracted us to it," Traynor said.

The group ended up dining at Mangia Qui along North Second Street and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. After finishing their meal, they returned to the Big Apple to do some research on their newfound city.

...

"This office probably fields three to five inquiries a week from outside search and consulting firms representing a wide variety of clients looking to establish a presence in or re-locate to the city or region," he said. "There is probably no area in Pennsylvania or the region that is so dramatically evolving as Harrisburg and Central PA."

Harrisburg's location attracts various industries because of the easy access to many large cities along the East Coast, said Shaun Donovan, economic-development specialist for the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & Capital Region Economic Development Corp. The cost of living and commercial rental rates also are lower, making properties more attainable for a development firm, he said.

"We have been fortunate here that though we have seen some rise in economic indicators such as unemployment, our rate here in the Harrisburg area has remained well below the state and national averages," Donovan said. "Having companies want to come here and having this be a competitive region should continue to keep our economy moving forward."

Not only have Traynor and Bartlett invested in commercial space in Harrisburg, the two also have purchased residential real estate and relocated from New York City to the midstate. London also plans to move to Harrisburg, Traynor said.

"Harrisburg is really undervalued, in my opinion," he said. "Even in this market, there are still opportunities in real estate and to invest long term at a relatively low cost."

Thumbs up Midtown Harrisburg Development

This is a great forum! I just wandered in and was reading the Harrisburg Art Center article. It got me curious who else is doing stuff in midtown because I've seen a lot of construction recently in addition to what Powers is doing. Anyway, I found these two articles on the Central Penn site and and a company called Midtown Development when I googled "midtown Harrisburg development." I don't know if anyone else saw these, but I thought I'd put 'em up.

It also sounds as if a bakery coffee shop kind of place is going in their building at 1419. Yum!!!

HARRISBURG
Restored houses offer opportunities
Sunday, November 09, 2008
BY JOHN LUCIEW
Of The Patriot-News

Talk about a tough housing market -- in the late 1970s and early 1980s, some Harrisburg homeowners simply abandoned their properties as the city sank to its nadir.

Now sections of the city once weighed down by dilapidated housing are seeing a rebirth, thanks to a coordinated effort by the city and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The most recent examples of the real estate redemption are in the 600 blocks of Oxford and Schuylkill streets, the 2400 and 2500 blocks of North Sixth Street, and in the 2300 block of Jefferson Street.

There, some 25 properties have either been restored or are on their way there, and 23 blighted properties have been demolished, representing a $2 million local and federal investment, Mayor Stephen R. Reed said Friday.

...

To inquire about the properties listed for sale, visit the city's Web site at Welcome to HarrisburgPA.gov The Official Web Portal for the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania or call 255-6480.

Unilife Medical Services moving HQ to York County
By Paula Holzman

An Australia-based medical-safety device company is moving its headquarters to Fairview Township, York County.

Unilife Medical Services is shifting its center of operations to the Lewisberry-area facility of Integrated BioSciences Inc. (IBS), which Unilife acquired in 2007.

"We would anticipate by the end of this quarter -- March 31-- that for all intents and purposes, Central Pennsylvania will be our global headquarters," said Stephen Allan, the company's vice president of communications.

The move brings Unilife closer to key business partners, including the New Jersey-based U.S. arm of France-based pharmaceutical company sanofi-aventis.

In July, Unilife inked a five-year exclusive license agreement to produce its Ready-To-Fill Syringe, which is manufactured at the York County facility, for sanofi-aventis.

Unilife expects to sign two more agreements with sanofi-aventis within 18 months, according to an analysis by New York-based equity firm Crystal Research Associates.

Unilife employs 60 people at IBS and plans to add at least 100 more workers, Allan said. "The majority will be focused on the design, development and production of innovative medical devices," he said.
