Default Retirement in State College Area?

We are thinking about retiring from northern NJ to the State College area. We've visited for one day earlier this summer and plan a three day trip at the end of September, staying in Bellefonte, to check out the area in more detail.

Can anyone give us any tips on the area, places that we should look at while there, interesting surrounding communities? (have seen Boalsburg and Bellefonte but not familiar with anything west of State College).

I love (road) cycling and any info in that area would also be appreciated.

Finally, can two NYU grads find happiness in PSU-land?

:-)

Jim

I don't know the current ranking, but a few years ago State College was in one of those lists of best places to retire in the country and it was way up there. I'm sorry I don't remember exactly, but it may have even been in the top ten.

If you head west of State College, be sure to check out Altoona's railroad museum and Horseshoe Curve.

Taking three days to explore the area is a wonderful idea. At the end of September you'll get the full flavor, as Penn State students will be back from summer break and you can see how vibrant and exciting the downtown area is.

Be sure to check out Beaver Stadium on a game day. You will be speechless!! If your up for a 40 min. ride head down to Raystown Lake and hike a couple trails at Trough Creek, absolutely beautiful!!! Especially during fall foliage. And since you like biking check out the rails to trails biking/walking paths around Water Street, South West of Happy Valley.
