I have lived in the Lewistown area for many years.
The nicest places to live are known as Pleasant Acres, Pleasant Acres West, Church Hill,
,all developements. Then small towns of Burnham, Yeagertown, Reedsville and Belleville.
The taxes are higher, 2007, in MifflinCounty, than Juniata County, Port Royal, but the school system is much better fopr education.
Juniata County is about to raise taxes considerably.
Mifflin County is contemplating a new High School for the inadaquate facilty "Indian VAQlley!"
Lewistown H.S. usually gets everything before the other school , Indian Valley.
The newly anticipated Indian Valley H.S. is being planned (A nice idea) for a much larger student body...SMART IDEA
Port Royal is a very small town, East of Mifflintown, PA.
No shopping, very rural, very small, so you would get much of the dirt from the Port Royal Speedway.
Nearby is a Koser Plant that processes chickens and turkeys for the Jewish sect in other areas.
In the Lewistown area the tax base is for all Mifflin County, whether it be Lewistown or Indian Valley H.S., so if you move there you will foot the bill for all new projects.
The education in Mifflin County, according to studies, is much better than Juniata County.
The latter county doesn't pay their teachers well, thus, they don't get the "Cream of the Crop!"
All in all.....Central Pa is nice to live in.
I read earlier about the prostitutes...
I am older, but I have never seen open solicitation by "Women of the Night!"
Finally: It doesn't matter where you move/live today, there is a drug problem.
As a father, grandfather and great-grandfather....if you rear your children, as one should, they will probably stay away from drugs, bad company and bad situations.
Good luck in your ventures.
DeS

I lived in Port Royal from 1999-2003 and I hated every minute of it! There's a dirt race track right in the middle of town & if you like the noise every Saturday & Wednesday night in the spring, summer, and fall, then it's a good place for you. The railroad track also runs right by the town & you can hear & feel it all over, all night long. The people aren't that friendly, either, unless you happen to be from there. If you're from somewhere else, forget it. I used to go to Lewistown for groceries, so I would recommend it over Port Royal, hands down. If you don't mind commuting, I would suggest Honey Grove or East Waterford, about 10 miles south of Port Royal. The people are nice there & it's a quiet, country setting.
