I'm not sure which of these to believe. But I do remember a wise insight from someone who has worked with the Amish (in both PA and Illiniois) for years and years: "Anyone can grow a beard and put on a hat and call themselves Amish woodworkers", or Amish furniture makers, or Amish whatever. Locals would see through it in an instant, outsiders not so fast.
The same outsiders were stopping their cars along a busy road in Strasburg snapping photos of this Actor in the buggy. I always told outsiders and people who wanted an Amish experience free of pomp and circumstance where to go, usually I suggest a trip up to Snyder County PA where the tourist thing does not exist but where you will find plenty of Amish and no actors, busses or tourist traps.

If there are actors that really bothers me.
It's a commercial insult to the Amish. :I
I'm from the twin tiers, all the Amish and Mennonite I knew were real. So at least I can hang on to that.
So you believe there is a conspiracy to pay actors to ride around in buggies? Who would do that, and more importantly, who would pay for that?!
I didn't say that. The guy who told me this was referring to craftsman-type woodworking and furniture-making shops, I don' think one could 'act' that part and produce an actual product.
But an imposter riding around in a buggy is not that far fetched. However, a conspiracy to pay people to do that is taking it up a few more levels, and being pretty brazen, too, and so on those last points I'd have to see it to believe it.
I have news for you, living in a low income area making minimum wage anywhere sucks. If you want to move somewhere where the employment scene is very fun, go to Vegas. I have some friends from there, supposedly during the economic "boom" you had to know somebody to get a job there. now...
Just curious, if PA sucks so much, I am curious at what other states are "so much better" and how the quality of life differs there because I am personally not seeing it.
I lived for a brief time in Utah( attending school) and people there are much more polite and friendly. I lived in Alabama for almost 10 years and same thing( people there would introduce themselves and bring food to you when you moved in). Here you are lucky if you don't get an accusatory stare when getting your mail as if you are a registered sex offender. I have been here 16 years( I moved here in 1996 when I was 18) and I can say that this area( I live in the Cumberland Valley area) has not grown much in the last 16 years, sure they built the Wegman's and Target, and all, but there really hasn't been much in the way of job growth or anything interesting around here, even in the late 90's and early 2000's when the economy was still good. This place has always felt stagnant and unwilling to progress and grow.

WOW! You described all 12 Million people living in all the different small towns, small cities, and large cities in Pennsylvania! Excellent post! Hats off to you!

Funny. I am from Utah, lived here for 20yrs. I think the people here are often more rude than those back east where there's a "reputation" of people being rude. I've lived in several other states & traveled around the US and Europe. I suppose it all comes down to each persons perspective & experiences
How come you don't move? That's a genuine question, not a snarky one.

What is so funny is he claims to live in a fairly small rural area in south central Pennsylvania, and then claims all of Pennsylvania's economy, arts, culture is based on his tiny rural section of Pennsylvania. Like he expects things to be happening and booming in small rural South Central PA.
yes, there is none of dem dare arts and culture in any of Pennsylvania
I grew up in PA and left as soon as I finished college.
Aesthetically: Yes, the countryside can be nice and there are a few nice small towns (Lewisburg, Bloomsburg, Doylestown), and a few parts of philadelphia are nice (Center City, Germantown) but the other 90% of the state is a wreck. For the most part Philadelphia is a filthy mess. Other than the three small towns I mentioned the rest Look like something out of a zombie movie..frozen in time full of crazy backwards people stuck in the 1950s. Harrisburg has a street or two but for the most part looks like a haunted shell. As far as Pittsburgh goes I was unimpressed with its bland Midwestern feel and year-round gloomy weather.
Out West you have appalachian hillbillies and bland Midwestern Pittaburghers. Central PA is a little rural for my tastes but it really is so insular being 3 hours to any modern civilization in any direction. Philidelphia could be world class if it wasn't for the complete 180 degree difference between downtown and er..the ghetto which surrounds it for miles and miles.
I think the plague is the people. They are contented with less than mediocrity. It's a shame though because PA has a lot of potential. It doesn't take much to put some New shutters on a town house and a flower box. Maybe plant some trees on the street. But not enough peopleople don't have that vision. They're content with their rotting lot.
I don't think PA sucks. I actually think most of the state is quite nice for various reasons.
