In 2004, Pittsburgh had the second highest percentage of registered Democrats in the country - - only New Orleans had more. It's not a Volvo style of Democratic Party, though - - more of the blue collar, Union Democratic Party, even though Pittsburgh is a much more modern city than that demographic would lead you to believe.

I think Central PA gets a bad rap and is just labeled monolithically. Yes, it is Republican voting on the whole. But there is a huge difference between the Harrisburg area and the mountainous counties above it. Pennsylvania really should be broken into a six-pack, not thirds. It used to be that some of the north central counties had more bear than people in them. The south central part of PA has its pockets of farmland and Southland to it, but it is around a bunch of small towns and areas that wouldn't look out of place in the suburbs of Philly or Pittsburgh.

I have never been to Alabama, but having travelled around PA, I can quite easily say Philadelphia is not like the rest of the state in the least, and really neither is Pittsburgh. And there is a pretty big difference between eastern PA and western PA. The west is definitely more of a midwestern state, while the east is much closer culturally to the northeastern/mid-atlantic states.

If central Pennsylvania resembled anything remotely Southern to me, then I never would have experienced the degree of culture shock that I did when I ended up in Georgia.

Or the culture shock to me when I moved to central PA (one hour north of Harrisburg). Southern gal here. But I have to say, I really do not see racism around here. Against illegal immigration yes, but legal immigrants and non whites? Not at all.

PA is a great state! And If we could only get rid of Philthy and Picksburg we'd be the best state!

The best part of PA is the "Alabama" part. Some people prefer not to live in the sprawl and crime filled cities. I love how people think "culture" is found in cities. The truth is that cities are the least cultured places.
