Default Tax

I know there is state & federal taxes, but is there something called an "Occupational or Work Tax"?

Yep, anything from $10 to $52 dollars per year, depending on the municipality in which you work!

In addition, a few school districts (Perkiomen Valley, for example) have a tax based on your occupation. I pay approx. $365/year for this. This tax is antiquated, but there are a handfull of districts that haven't abolished/replaced it yet.

In our school district, we get an increased income tax percentage in lieu of the old occupational assessment, which was abolished a couple of years ago by voter referendum.

Here is a page which explains some of these taxes and has a look-up function: IES: Emergency and Municipal Services (EMS) Tax Questions & Answers (broken link)

The most horrible thing to me as an ambulance volunteer is the unfortunate naming of the "EMS Tax." Not one dime of that was passed on to the local ambulance service, yet residents thought we were getting the money and stopped making donations. I see it is being renamed for 2008.

Here in Snyder County we still pay the occupational tax. I'm a housewife and I even pay $10 per year. The $52 EMS tax (which used to be a $10 occupation tax, was increased a year or two ago, and is now being renamed for the very reason Karen cited) will be taken out $1 per week from your paycheck. Anyone making less than $12,000 is exempt from this tax.
