Iris,
There are several congregations in the vicinity (lancaster) Not too far from MJ. Here are a few:
shaarai.org
degelisrael.org
tbelancaster.org
Hope this helps, and if you decide to move here, welcome to the area!

Not here in Lancaster City. I can't speak to the suburbs or rural areas, although we have occasionally encountered people who live well outside the City who express attitudes like the ones you mentioned.

You bring up a good point, Artie See. My wife and I both lived in Philly so maybe we're more accustomed to city attitudes and not the snobby nonsense we've encountered here. Thanks.

Lancaster county
Lancaster county in PA is not dry, its is a great place to live, you may also want to look at The greator Harrisburg area here in PA, good acces to major highways, rt 81, rt 83, rt 15, PA Turnpike. Avoid Middletown PA becasue taxes are high. You'll find home prices and real estate taxes a lot less here in south central PA. Don't over look Lebanon county.

Woo-hoo, glad to see I'm not the only one from LI trying to get to PA. Where do you think all the home owners of the million+ homes for sale here are going?? Umm, it's not to a more expensive home here, they're going off the Island!!!

living in Lancaster..
I moved from New England about 8 years to Lancaster...they say New England is full of mean and nasty people...which can be true, but to be honest my experience in Lancaster has not been good. I love the country, the area, everything about it except the people. Its very difficult to make friends here. So many people have lived here all their lives, their families are right here, so they dont want new friends. I will say people are very nice to your face, but they just are not interested in making friends...the same goes for churches around here as well. I was in a church for 6 months before anyone initiated saying hello, and even after that no body wants new friends. Its been very difficult for me and my husband to establish any kind of life because of this. We love the area, but the people are just to closed off to "outsiders" not born and bred here.

Sooo many people complain about moving to Lancaster. Not to be such a continual booster of Harrisburg, but it might be a bit better to consider the Harrisburg/Carlisle area instead. You still can have the country atmosphere you want, but the locals here are much less backward and more friendly and you are still only 20-30 minutes from all the Lancaster county attractions.

Look in East Hempfield, Manheim Township or Lampeter-Strasburg for great public schools and lots of young, affluent families with children. We've lived here 12 years (originally from Florida) and it takes some time to get to know people but we love it. It's almost a perfect community...lots of culture (Fulton Opera House, PA Academy of Music, Franklin & Marshall College, etc.), history and things to do with children. Sure it's conservative, but that usually makes for a great, safe place to live. There are liquor stores here, but just like the rest of PA you can only buy alcohol in state stores.
