Hi City Datians, my wife and I are moving from the DC/richmond area of VA so that my wife may work at the york hospital. We are planning to stay for a year or two. If you guys could help guide me to a safe, convenient, affordable location in the york area, I would be very grateful.

When are you moving? may/jun
Where are you coming from? richmond, nova, Virginia
Why are you moving? wife is working at york hospital
Where will you be working?
Have you been here yet? yes just for a short while near yorktowne hotel (found a great price on priceline). after some google map searching, i like the wal marts in the west and east. but i also like the workplace and gold's gym in the south.

Will you buy or rent? rent
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend?
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? we would like to spend < 1k/mo but may do more to be in a safe area
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up?

Are you married or single? Do you have children? married w/o kids
Do you prefer public or private schools?
Do you have pets? nope
Do you want or need a yard? nope
Are you keeping a car? yes 2
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? close to grocery shopping, not dead but not NYC bustling, just the average suburb

What do you want to be closest to?
Work, gym, grocery shopping, last priority is to be slightly closer to DC.

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? just a safe neighborhood would be welcome.

Phillies, Pirates or Mets? Mets (grew up in long island/nj)

I think a lot of people are going to encourage you to move to the suburbs, but the city is so beautiful that I hope you will consider one of the historic neighborhoods in town.

I'll consider it. do you have a specific area in town? For example, living in south east DC would be a no-no but living near dupont circle would be very expensive and much safer.

If you can find a place to rent in the southeast quadrant (Routes 83/30 as the dividers). She can travel any number of back roads to York Hospital. The areas of Dallastown, Red Lion, and the areas between exits 16/18 would all be very safe. If you want an apartment complex, there are many~The Royal Court has several of them (Route 24 South of Route 124), there is Greensprings, Powder Mill Manor~York Hills and York Apartments have many York Hospital employees living in them. All are in safe areas and convenient to getting/on off Route 83. There will be major construction/renovation at the intersection of Haines Road and Mt. Rose Avenue over the next 3 or 4 years, so that area will be very congested and traffic will be rerouted as they prepare to put in access ramps, express lanes etc.
