Looking to possibly visiting PA next year, but would like to stay an overnighter in the mountains outside of Pittsburg, more to the East of it along the toll road 70/76. Any recommendations or highly rated places to stay that my family could enjoy a mountain adventure for a day? Sorry if this sounds too general, I haven't thought of any specifics just yet. Been through the PA mountains before a few times by car, just love that drive, very beautiful! Possibly thinking July 2013 trip if that helps any.

I don't have first hand experience vacationing or living in that area.

But for general starters, the main turnpike exits for mountain activities are Somerset, Bedford, and Breezewood. Next exit east is Fort Littleton ... still in beautiful mountainous country, but you're not going to find any hotels around there, because Fort Littleton isn't really even a town. McConnelsburg and Mercersburg to the south are very small towns, but seem to have a few hotels. Plenty of turnpike truck stop type hotels in Breezewood and Bedford. Somerset and Bedford are actually decent sized towns with plenty of hotels, and Somerset is close to the famous Laurel Summit / Seven Springs mountain recreational area. Bedford has access to the north, via I-99, to Altoona/State College/ Raystown State Park. Probably thinking Somerset and Bedford exits are your best bet.

And, it's Pittsburgh, not Pittsburg.

Hope you get some more answers from people with first hand experience.

Definitely Ligonier. It's a beautiful small town, east of Pittsburgh, located in the mountains. This is where you should go. Also, you may enjoy the Flood Museum in Johnstown, which is deep in the gorgeous mountains. If you go further east, you'll want to see Gettysburg!

I can't believe I didn't spell that correctly. All these years thinking it was spelled that way. Shows you what I know about the city. Love the Steelers Stadium though, and the fans are die hard, which makes for some exciting games.

I'm a big fan of Bedford and Johnstown. I'd probably stay in one of those.
