What's a great village town outside of Pittsburgh?
I'm going to start researching the area with the idea of relocating, and would like to find something that is nice for people with dogs who like to walk into town, but that also has good off-leash trails nearby. I'm not into newer homes, but perfer something with historic homes. I don't have children so I'm not concerned about schools, but would like a decent road into Pittsburgh.
Thanks for any suggestions!

It's a little more than outside of PGH, but it is a nice place. Plenty of hiking in the area. It's far enough out to be country, and close enough to everything you might need.
Welcome to the Conneaut Lake Resort Area of Pennsylvania!

the latrobe/ligonier area is nice. its within an hour of pittsburgh. if you want closer to pittsburgh, the butler area would be a bit closer. north of butler is pretty woodsy, and south of butler is more developed and takes you right to pittsburgh on route 8.

I recommend an hour north of Pittsburgh, in the New Castle area. There are small townships surrounding New Castle. Lots of acreage for homeowners. Schools in townships are moderate 100-170 students in graduating classes. New Wilmington, Shenango, Laurel, Mohawk, Union, Neshannock to name a few. There are three schools in the New Wilmington area, in which I live: New Wilmington Elementary, Pulaski ELementary, and East Lawrence (Volant) Elementary. These Elementary schools all attend the same Middle school, and High school, but have K-3rd grade separately. This school district (Wilmington Area school district) is farm land wide spread. Amish, and lots of other farmers; plus lots of people that work in larger cities nearby that love the quaint town of New Wilmington. Live in downtown area, or township (country feeling) areas. Lots of cities nearby for shopping convenience. Just next to Ohio border too.
Good luck in your search.

How far from Pittsburgh? Edgewood the first ring suburb around Pittsburgh is beautiful. It has Frick park near by and is part of Regent Square and its business district. It feels like a village with a walkable little downtown area.
I really don't know what you mean by village town? LIke a place with 250 people, nothing else around, and a Olsen's merchentile in the center next to the school house?
There are a lot of cool old towns outside of Pittsburgh both far and close. But if you are working in the city why drive 25 miles or more a day?
