try not to pick a home to close to the college.
Kear/Armbruster [jp] pretty much keep law and order there.
I recall a melee- the college brats thought daddio could make a phone call and get off the charges. NOPE. The tried to play the paper...the daily item. it did not work. you do crime- you pay...plain and simple here.
I live in the SUN are [snyder union northumberland] it would be hard to amtch the quality of life here.

You are lucky to have a chance to live in Lewisburg PA. I grew up in Sunbury about 10 miles down the road. Also a nice town. We are looking at Lewisburg to retire in.

You are so right about the SUN. I grew up in the N part. I now live in western PA. No comparision to the SUN. These people out here don't know what living is.

I lived in Lewisburg for many years. I also worked in Lewisburg for 35 years and graduated from high school there.
I've seen it change tremendously in the last 30 years.
Lewisburg has the highest rated school system in the area according to the Standard and Poors school accessment survey. The school system has out performed all the neighboring school districts for decades. The high school has an enrollment number in the 600 student vicinity.
Crime has always been very low in Lewisburg. Most of the problems are
caused by Bucknell students who get pie-eyed and become rowdy as a result. However, a recent crackdown by the Lewisburg police dept. has calmed them down a bit.
Lewisburg also had a manufacturing base at one time of about 5 factories. They have all closed and moved overseas. The last one out was Pa. House Furniture in the spring of '05.
They're currently building a Wal*Mart Super Center which will replace the current Wal*Mart and Giant Markets is trying to obtain land to build a large grocery store just south of Lewisburg on Rt. 15. If shopping is your pleasure, is available to some extent. If you like malls, there are two very large ones in the vicinity. One is about 20 miles north and the other is about 15 miles to the south.
Market Street in Lewisburg is like traveling back in time with a very Victorian feel to it. It's mostly occupied by small craft and specialty shops. Wal*Mart drove most of the other retail store out of business.
Lewisburg is a 'Bedroom Community' now, occupied mostly by professional folks such as Bucknell Professors and Doctors et al from the town's hospital.
The taxes are extremely high and the people can be a bit snooty as times. About 15 years there was a big controversy about building a new high school. One of the school board members made the remark.."If you don't have a house worth $150K and make $75K a year, you shouldn't live in Lewisburg" (an example of the attitude some people have)
if you buy a house in town, the town council is very strict with what you can do with it. They cite 'historical reasons' and most improvements have to meet very strict criteria.
But, for the most part, it's a great town and I miss living there.
The public school system is fantastic but the taxes are the highest in the area.

It's a shame what's happened to Sunbury.
I think the Susquehanna Mall pretty well destroyed it.
There's nothing left there anymore. I can remember when Sunbury had everything and was the economic hub of the valley. Most everything is gone now except for the rising crime rate.
I can remember when the Brave's football team was unstoppable. Now, they're lucky to win 2 or 3 games a year.
When I drive through Sunbury, I always lament on its present condition but I try to think about the good days and how things were.

the fat lady has not sang on Sunbury!
they/we are getting an otdoor ampatheator.
the mall suburbanized the area no doubt. pardom me for saying this but you are genuine old timer- :-)
the comments about Lewisburg being snobby are also tru of Selinsgrove. I loook at it this way. it is easier for me to live here when the red necks are balanced out.
some of the church people can really get to you.
a good example. that controversial movie- brokeback mountain. was banned in my buuddies town in Oklahoma, population 60k. here it played and left w/o me even gettting a chance to see it.
it is BECAUSE of Lewisburg and Selinsgrove that it wasnt banned here.

Believe me! I've lived in this area for all my life and the 'fat lady' sang a long time ago in Sunbury. It's never coming back. I haven't a clue what the ampitheatre will do for Sunbury except to destroy their flood wall and create a new canvas for graffiti artists.
The last and the present mayors have done what they can as far as confronting the slum lords and some areas are showing improvement as far as asthetics are concerned.
Sunbury needs commerce and good paying jobs to rebuild the tax base. I really don't see that happening. But, I would certainly like to see Sunbury return to its former glory of low-crime, cleanliness and strong economic activity. You would not believe what it was like 30 years ago compared to today.
heh-heh..You're right, Selinsgrove is a bit snobby too. Selinsgrove always wanted to be Lewisburg. :-) Yep...and there is a large abundance of rednecks, especially from the western part of the county. I'm right smack in the middle between the rednecks and the elitists and it's hard to fit in. I noticed there's not much middle ground.
Most of the so-called redneck folks are very friendly but suspicious of new arrivals. The local culture for the most part is comprised of large 'clans'which can make it difficult for outsiders to be accepted.
Still, I like it here.

Susq, I love your matter-a-fact style tell it like it is style. :-)
Im 43. Growing up- we visited Selinsgrove 1-2x a year as moms side of family is here. Gram lives near Lynns Market.
I remember the old bridge. Drag cars would go on it to show off.
Due to water and sewer costs- I dont think I would buy in Sunbury. Even Shamokin would be better.
Heres a memory. The old traffic circle.
I moved here in 1988. unless one went to high school here - one will never fit into the major click.
With tenants what they are- I wont sign on a place where it is $400 to have not counting mortgage.
I lived in the 3rd ward in Sunbury for 7 years. I loved it.
Tho- this place here is nicer.
I been eyeing western pa. Since I am retired- it is getting harder to afford this area.
Remember Sean Wise, the Chiropractor?, or Dr Gragowski the dentist. [just say no] Then I recall how Dr? rogers tried to play the daily item. The daily Item will eat you up chew you up and spit you out.
Who controls the daily item? A 4 letter word- begins with "w'.
BTW= where are teh good hoaggie shops anymore?
