I've been living in Glen Rock for about 5 years now... I like the area very much... Ended up living here while house hunting, work in MD like most people that live here and found that I could get alot of home for a comparatively small amount of $$$ compared to MD. Taxes are a bit high and the water bill is a killer (almost $100 a month compared to friends in MD who pay perhaps $15 a month on a quarterly basis) -- but there are possitives and negatives no matter where you go. I paid about $150K for a home with 17 rooms on a half acre... it was a forclosure but after a few years of sweat equity it has become a very nice home for my family.
This area is well suited for people who like a quiet community... I live right in the heart of this historic old city and it is a great place to raise a family... crime is non-exhistent and there are many many places to eat and entertain within minutes of my house. There is a movie theater within walking distance, 2 banks, 2 very nice restaurants (one being the Glen Rock Mill Inn which also rents rooms and serves as a local hotel for visitors), gas station, nursery, local Shur-fine grocery store, and that's all I've had the chance to see just up and down Manchester Street...
There is a large Park about 2 or 3 blocks away where a very nice fireworks display is shown every July 4th (suprisingly long for such a "small" community), there are 2 large old churches located just a block from my home in different directions both of which are displayed on old turn of the century postcards. There are carnivals at the park as well.
Now if you want to drive for about 10 minutes to exit 4 off I-83 you'll find yourself in the heart of "modern day america" with a Home depot, Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Wendy's, Ace Hardware, Subway, Advance auto store, Ruby Tuesdays, Cracker Barrel, couple more banks, and a whole lot more.
I'm really glad I live where I do, very happy here, people are all very cool and the home values are going up unlike anywhere else I can think of. People take pride in their homes here and it shows... There are many turn of the century victorians here with amazing detail and over time some newer bungalos were built up in between... I know of only 2 apartment complexes in this city (it's not a "town" tyvm) and they are well cared for and do not detract from the overall appeal of the area.
Someone else wrote that the commute is long into Baltimore... I work in Towson and I spend only about 25 minutes on 83 each morning with a total commute time of about 45 minutes give or take. Personally I think that's a pretty average commute. I will tell you that houses don't stay on the market for long here because people are migrating here from Baltimore... Baltimore it's not... and thats a good thing
