Here is a hilarious description of Erie I found while surfing the internet:

"Erie is a place you can go to make it all just wonderful. Particularly, if you have vacations soon then this place would be the best choice to go many times on every day. Whole location is very well cleaned and beautiful where many people are available to guide about different ways and fun activities. That is why Erie is considered as one of the most renowned picnic place of its country.

Holidays are special for kids and they never want to spend them without getting pleasure and enjoyment. You can take your children at this exceptional place so they can make their vacations just gratifying. Though it seems that fares are quite expensive but it truly means it. Kids like this spot a lot and want to come here again and again. Erie lets you forget everything while enjoying most joyful moments of your life."

Maybe your slogan idea wasn't so off the mark after all ...

I've been scoping out Johnstown to Somerset area and Erie to Grove City. Rentals are not easy to find, especially house rentals, that are under 850.

I enjoy reading the PA forums as you all seem to joke around in your disagreements without personally attacking each other, at least from the few threads I've browsed.
It's just a different feel in the PA forum than the city-data or even the NC forum. I'm sure spies from those other forums are reading this right now and preparing for a counter-attack
Western PA in general is a pretty challenging place to find rentals. My wife and I rented a house short-term, so we could look for a house to buy and the house we ended up renting was one that had a for rent sign in the yard. I have lived in several areas across the country and I was very surprised that when we moved to PA there seemed to be very few rentals on Craigslist and other websites that people typically use to search for rental houses. If you are looking in Erie, I would definitely recommend driving there and looking for rental signs (in addition to the typical searches). I know in the city of Erie, it is pretty easy to find a house to rent for under $1,000. In fact, we lived in one of the better city neighborhoods and rented a 4 bedroom house for $900 a month.

I'm just curious what made you decide against the other Eastern PA cities?

I mean, if you like the style of housing in Pittsburgh and York, but Harrisburg was a bit too modern, you could easily look at Lancaster, Reading, Allentown, Bethelehem, and Easton. Or hell, even Pottsville or Lebanon. All of them have a pretty similar, dense but small urban environment, with plenty of intact rowhouses.

Yeah, but he also said these were his favorite two. So I'm just curious.

Location. Also the state of preservation. York is incredibly, unbelievably intact, in terms of historic built environment. There was no urban renewal catastrophe in the '70s, like there was in Lancaster and Harrisburg. Also, I LOVE the location of York, a half hour drive from Gettysburg, Harrisburg, and Lancaster, and only an hour from Baltimore. I've heard so many bad things about Reading and Allentown that I crossed them off my list, although I'm sure I would love them. York's location trumps them, though, at least for me (proximity to NYC would be cool, but I could always get there by train through Lancaster). I love Pottsville, but it's just a little too small and isolated for me. There is a job opening in York that I really want to apply for, but moving is a rough decision to make. I'm not sure I can go through with it.
