As far as the areas being bad in Altoona, you cant say any area is good or bad. For example look at the areas by the now old Keith school, start out on 13th Ave and theres bad areas...go up 4 blocks to 17th Ave and theres nicer homes with more cared forlawns ect , continue on up to 25th Ave and you'll find some of the nicest houses in Altoona. It all depends on the type of neighbors you have and whether or not they have pride in their living situation.
I am there almost monthly, maybe more to visit family and friends, so I am still VERY AWARE of how bad Altoona is and is not. I grew up there and it's not like it used to be.

Why do you think they call Hollidaysburg High School, "Heroin High???" If Altoona citizens would take a little pride and start looking out for our town, we'd be set.
Wow-you must be brave as there are many sections I wouldn't walk in broad daylight. I don't know about drugs and such in Hollidaysburg, just that it has nice homes and such. I do know about Bellwood and I don't see a huge drug problem there-at least not from a school stand point. They take a lot of pride in their school and are very good at no-bully policies. I went to Altoona High as did one of my brothers, and another brother graduated from Bellwood while my last brother is in the Bellwood schools.

When I went to Altoona High it wasn't that bad but there was a "bring your gun to school day" where there was a rumour that a lot of the "bad" kids were going to bring guns to school on a particular day. I think 2/3 of the school didn't show up that day. It has gotten worse over time. (that was over 10 years ago...lots has happened in 10 years)

Altoona may not be bad to some, but for my standards it is. It drives me nuts that my family still lives there. I want more for my kids.

Altoona is full of wanna be's. The city is still a place to raise your children. Me i moved here from New Mexico which is 1 of the worse places of violence so i can pick out the real from fake. Personaly i dont think theres nothing to worry about the violence in altoona is 1 of the lowest. For ex. the has only been 1 homocide all year and not that many more crimes. I lived here now for 4 years and haven't seen not even a little sign of gangs in this town. Jus a couple kids saying they're this or that but truthfully they are putting on a act to seem tough or cool. Nobody in this town that claims there in a gang is going to do Anthing a real gang does. So for everybody second guessing Altoona you really have nothing to fear here.

One gang i know of fo sure dats here is the 9MillSouljas. They wear black & sumtimes white. They can be a violent group. Right now there's maybe 100-200 people in that gang. Also they are not jus in a certain part of town they're spread out. They could very well be a threat, but i cant say fo certain.
