Thanks for the comments and thoughts, I am surprised by so many people's aversion to property taxes in the city of Erie. The taxes are definitely higher in the city, but for the most part this drives the property prices down so it is basically a wash. The houses we looked at in Millcreek all cost more than comparable houses in Erie and because of this our payment would have been the same. In other words, Erie = more taxes, but lower price, Millcreek = lower taxes, higher price. All of this could change pretty soon since Millcreek is looking at building a $100 million+ high school in the near future.

My children are not in school yet, but they will attend Harding when they are at the school age. I have heard good things about Connell also, is this the school by Mercyhurst?

In terms of the non-profit issue with Erie, I agree with what you are saying about the income tax thing, but property taxes for massive buildings and medium size to large companies are much higher than the little bit over 1% income tax that the city charges. I know this is an inherent issue with many of the larger cities in a region. However, Millcreek is now over half the size of Erie and still benefits from many of these services without the loss of tax revenue. In other words, if the residents of Albion or another smaller Erie County town are using some of these resources it is not the same as the impact of 50,000+ residents of Millcreek having access to these resources. Especially because there appears to be less and less indirect spending in the city with all of the development of upper Peach St. Many Erie County residents are working for companies that are now based in Summit Twp. or Millcreek like Lord or any of the retail on Peach.

Yes, Connell is the school near Mercyhurst, on East 38th Street near Zimmerman Road.
