A new chapter is about to open in the continuing story of the disintegration in Happy Valley. A book coming out this week contains a painfull description of Joe Paterno's collapse upon his firing, and Jerry Sandusky's comments continue to add nothing but inflammatory nonsense.

What both the alumni and the public have had to face up to over the past ten months is a picture of a system completely out of control, toppled by the foibles of two once-powerful men, by then in their dotage, but also aggravated by a Board of Trustees and Administration torn between the lure of Madison Avenue and the collection of contradictions labelled as "Political Correctness".

As a person who was an undergraduate when the story began, who resided in the area as a working adult during the program's finest years, but who slowly found himself alienated as things became more commercialized and shallow during the late Eighties, I would like some answers, as would perhaps 200,000+ Penn State alumni.

During the last five to ten years before everything fell apart, you didn't need a degree in psychology to recognize the tensions which were building. Paterno's fear of retirement was both palpable and occasionally referenced in the open. The supposed "purpose" of Sandusky's Second Mile fraud had a natural appeal (on the surface) to some of us who had concerns about the weakening of our young men by too many single-parent female-dominant households. Yet in one of the best-educated communities in the nation, no one seemed to muster the will to look a little below the surface.

Sadly, there appear to be many dark corners in this tragedy still to be investigated. In the light of the scandal, even the disappearance of the Centre County District Attorney a few years ago now demands a new airing, While eveidence of Patero's at-least-passive complicity in the cover-up has strengthened, I do not believe that a man of his age could have masterminded such deceit alone. And the attempts to manage the coverage by PSU's detractors demands a similar airing.

A lot of us don't have that many good years left to seek the truth.

The "agony" will only continue as long as people continue to beat a dead horse. Get a life, most of us have moved past this media created event.

PSU Alumni are allowed to ask questions and still be shocked over this whole story while still having a life.

If so, why did the media, including the sports-only media, begin addressing the issue as the "Penn State scandal", rather than the "Sandusky scandal" within hours of its emergence???

Penn State might be compared, in the culture of NCAA football, as the New York Yankees are in baseball, or IBM in the technology game, or Japan in the family of economically-competitve nations -- until everything fell apart, a slightly-eccentric player with an outstanding track record. but also resented, to some degree, by many of those "on the outside". When the blood appeared in the water, a lot of people remembered old scores -- literally! And they had some "help" from people whose ideology had little to do with football.

I thoink most of us are well above the handfull of fanatics who are still trying to resurrect the PSU program intact. The end product, for better or for worse, is that Paterno and Penn State got a unique, but tarnished spot in the record books; and I believe that the current, very-harsh judgement driven by "pop wisdom" will be viewed in a different, but not-necessarily-gentler light, if the full story can be ascertained.

We want more of the facts, and a little less of NCAA and ESPN "lynch law".

Looks like I won't be playing racquetball with my brother next time I visit State College.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Do you take your children to the Intramural Building on Penn State’s campus to shoot some baskets, or accompany them with a bag of volleyballs for a few drills?

Do you head over to Rec Hall for a game of racquetball, or go for an evening jog around the indoor track there or the outdoor track by the Multisport Facility?

Such traditionally commonplace activities for many living in the region are no longer allowed for anyone who does not have a campus identification card, according to a new Penn State policy. New restrictions are among the many changes resulting from the Jerry Sandusky scandal as the university tries to control access to campus facilities.

Uhhhhhhhhhh...no. Penn State's prior image was self-created smoke and mirrors. The Yankees are regarded as an elite team because, well, they have won more championships than any other team in its sport. Penn State, despite all this "success with honor" bullcrap, was nothing more than a mediocre team on the field, which looked down their noses at other college football programs for petty jaywalking-like offenses like recruiting violations and under the table payments, all the while covering up the most heinous crimes imaginable and letting the perpetrator roam free on their campus with children....
