Wellsboro and Mansfield are in a very rural part of the state. It is in "the country". They aren't any decent sized cities nearby. Williamsport is probably the closest, and that is even about a 40 minute drive. It is a beautiful, mountainous region of Pa. Awesome scenery, and great if you are an outdoorsman. Great area for hiking, fishing, hunting if you enjoy these activities. I lived in nearby Coudersport for a year when I was a child, and I loved it there. It is isolated though. It is in the middle of nowhere.

Then you haven't eaten at Timeless Destinations in Wellsboro. As good as some of the 5 star Itallian restaurants we eat at in Pittsburgh.

Can anyone tell me if there are many good opportunities for canoeing/kayaking in Tioga County? And what about fishing?

You'll be in heaven for all activities. Your main point of interest will be Pine Creek and Pine Creek Gorge. There are many businesses in the area that give guided kayaking trips on the stream. They also rent kayaks if you are interested.

Trout fishing is also huge in Pine Creek and in the many smaller cold mountain streams in the area.

If you don't mind feeling like you live in a retirement community with not a whole lot going on, and a lot of farmers/hunters, than this is the place for you. But if you are looking for ANY KIND of a night life, this is the worst place you could be. I am 26, and a college student here at MU. No culture here. There is no good food, no real Italian food, or Chinese food, there is proabably even ONE shop that has near-acceptable pizza.
I would strongly consider visiting here prior to making any desicion. Even all the young people that grew up here can't wait to get out. The only things you can do here is ski at two different ski resorts during the insanly long winter, both more than a half hour away, or you can hike at the Grand Canyon, and there are a lot of State Parks around. But unless you are a mountian man, or serious hiker, and spend all your time on mountains or hunting, you may regret your move after being here after just a few months. Keep in mind, I am saying this as someone who moved here as well.
Pretty much I'd agree. It can be limiting in many ways. Probably how it works well for me is I travel out of state all over for work. Otherwise it would be tougher. It can be a bit limiting, especially the dating scene which is about as bad as it gets.

It is a hard community to integrate with and certainly I think it is stuck in rut with the same old fuddy duddies running the town/business community. I believe they need some new blood/ideas/investment/new business and in contrast to the beliefs of some, I think you could do that without destroying the small town feel. Otherwise without that, it's a dying area

Timeless can be a bit spotty I find on the quality. Sometimes really good, sometimes so so.

The main season for canoeing/kayaking will be from late april to mid june. After that the water level drops quite a bit and it isn't as feasible.

Plenty of places to fish that is for sure.

niceguy123 is on a distinguished road
Default Information Please

Greetings! I will be moving to the Mansfield area this summer. I will be teaching at the university and don't want to live too far away. Since I don't want to buy a home yet, are there any apartment complexes in the general vicinity? I am a southern guy who has NO experience driving in snow. The closer to the university the better! Thanks!!!

The area around here is so small that apartment complexes don't really exist. Apartments here consist of converted old houses that have been subdivided into 2 or 3 apartments. You can find ads for rentals in the Wellsboro Gazette online.

All the apartments I have seen around here are pretty dire so hopefully you'll luck out. The glory days for around here were pre great depression so there is only a small segment of housing that dates past that and it's not a prosperous area hence a lot of run down properties.

I know a fellow who is rehabbing houses in Mansfield for rental just for your market. Just one guy doing it one at a time. If interested, contact me directly and I could get you his phone number.
