I'm not sure about the work situation in Bradford County, but Wellsboro and Mansfield are both towns that fit your description. Mansfield has a university but it's still a small, quiet town. Wellsboro has a nice downtown area and is close to the PA Grand Canyon and a small animal park.

Mansfield is just east of Wellsboro on Route 6 and also on Route 15. It may actually be in Tioga County and not Bradford, but I'm not positive on that.

Mansfield and Wellsboro are both in Tioga County. Just to the east along U.S. Route 6 are the quaint small towns of Troy and Towanda in Bradford County, which are also very nice areas. I did photo tours of both Wellsboro and Towanda---do a search for them.

Duh! Thanks, Paul. I got my counties mixed up.

Towanda is a great little town. A couple smaller towns in Bradford County (I checked this time to be sure) are Athens and Sayre, right at the NY border.

Towanda has at least two big companies, Osram Sylvania (light bulbs) and DuPont (paint). There may be more, I don't know. Towanda is a real nice town.

We have a cabin in Tioga county and love it there as well. Jobs may be an issue in either county though. I guess you just have to do your homework!

I live on the line between Tioga & Bradford counties. As a carpenter, I think you may find the job situation a bit challenging simply because there are an abundance of contractors in the area. It's also not very well-paying if you're looking for a home in the 200's unless you pick up a maintenance type job at one of the larger employers. Bradford County: DuPont (fuel cell tech, LCD stuff), Sylvania Lighting, Craftmaster Mfg, GE Railcar, Cargill, ShopVac, Mill's Pride. Tioga County: Hitachi Metals, Mansfield Univ, Sylvania Lighting. Many people in both counties commute into NY. There are multiple Corning Inc plants around Elmira/Corning, Sikorsky, Synthes, Hardinge, etc are in Elmira. Lockheed-Martin has a huge facility just east of Sayre. Also, 200k in this region buys quite a bit of house. That sort of price gets you along the lines of an excellent condition Victorian in-town, or some acreage & new construction home outside town often with a pond or lake frontage, views, etc.
