Erie - The good and the bad
Just looking for some input on the good and the bad points about Erie....such things as the social climate (liberal or conservative), the neighborhoods (are there nicer older neighborhoods), and any other bits of input on the city. On my numerous visits to the area, I have found it to be quite an attractive town.

Hopefully someone will answer. My only experience with Erie is a close friend who went to college there and her comments on how cold and snowy the winters were. She said they call Erie "the mistake on the lake". I think there's a nice park there (Presque Isle?) that's been revitalized recently, and I understand the lake is being cleaned up (Lake Erie used to be a cesspool).

I just moved to Pittsburgh from Erie last October, and had lived in Erie all my life. I was heavily involved with the Democratic party there and wrote regularly in the Erie Times.
The bad and sad of Erie; industry has made a very strong departure. Companies have moved the plants to Mexico, China, or elswhere in the US. Erie is very very conservative, very unwilling to change with the times. Any time anyone wants to do something progressive in the city it gets squandered for ridiculous reasons.
It is very nice there. However, because of a former mayor who ran the city's budget in the ground, the police force has been scaled way back. The only area I would live in in the city anymore is from 32nd street south to the border of Milcreek Township.

I find that quite surprising, given that there are more registered Democrats in Erie than there are Republicans.
Are they "blue-collar Democrats"?

Very much so. People simply don't want change.

Sad that they don't, isn't it?
I've found in my quest to find the place I want to live that the two hardest things to find are an open minded populace, and reasonably priced real estate.
Seems those places that treasure open minds also have the highest real estate prices. Maybe it's because they're so uncommon, people like us all want to move there.
