While heading into church this morning on a hill near Downtown Pittston I pointed out some thick black smoke billowing up from the southern horizon. I thought there might have been a home on fire in the city's Oregon Heights neighborhood, but I just logged onto WNEP-TV Online to discover that the fire was actually at the old hulking Murray Complex, a long-blighted warehouse, on the corner of Courtright & Darling Streets in Wilkes-Barre, near Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

There are some impressive photos of the fire in a slideshow on WNEP's web site, but my computer right now is having difficulty opening them. This property is in a very densely-populated neighborhood of the Diamond City, not far from King's College, and I can only imagine the evacuations that must have occurred in the area.

On the plus side nobody has been hurt (thus far), and now there is an excuse to tear down this dump, clear the land, and utilize it either for public green space or perhaps for new homes or townhomes to help boost the city's residential tax base.
