Did you skip some? There should be 67 on the list. I'm surprised that Carbon County isn't higher.

I'm surprised Westmoreland isn't higher myself. That county is freeloader central.

Philadelphia wins again Sorry I couldn't resist after the argument I have been having with pman in the other thread. This is pretty interesting data and how does this look in terms of city vs. county? In other words, city of Erie vs. Erie county or city of Pittsburgh vs. Allegheny county. I am interested to see if certain cities significantly influence a county's average poverty rate.

Hilarious that Philadelphia is at the top, and all of the surrounding suburban counties are at the bottom. LOL. So sad.

In 2009, Pittsburgh proper had a poverty rate of 28.1%... so just RIGHT BEHIND Philadelphia

...
fwiw pittsburgh were coterminus with its county it would be second behind philadelphia

The city of Pittsburgh historically has a higher poverty rate, which -- like the county -- showed a sharper increase, from 22.3 percent to 23.8 percent.

Paco-centre county is penn state. wouldn't students mean higher poverty rates?

as you may have guessed, the same dynamic is at play in pittsburgh as well (and likely all over the country to greater or lesser extents). no?

I won't hijack your thread Paco and instead I will focus back to the issue you posted. It appears that the central and western PA counties have very high poverty rates. Any theories why this is the case? pman brings up a good point about the students at Penn State and I am wondering if this also influences Indiana County because of IUP. Butler county appears to be the only western PA county with a healthy poverty rate. I am wondering if the wealthy fleeing Allegheny county to avoid property taxes have any influences in this case.

It would be interesting if you could strip out student populations. obviously state college would be the most affected by both philly and pittsburgh have significant student populations. how much would they drop? would high poverty rate places cluster rather than having a few outliars? if fayette had more colleges would it seem worse?

Most likely because a lot of these counties just have no real industry to speak of. Again, though, I feel like the list is incomplete, even though I realize now that my statement was wrong because PacoMartin is only showing counties below poverty level. Much of the Northern Tier (Bradford, Susquehanna, Tioga, etc.) is missing, and I have a feeling that at least some of those counties are. I wonder where they would place on the list, since there isn't much industry in that region other than natural gas operations.

I'm still skeptical of the list too. Carbon County just seems very poor, and a lot of people are on assistance. What information are they basing this on? Per capita income, household??

Here's a list of the per capita income by county according to 2010 census info.

First column is rank, second is county name, third is per capita income, fourth is median household income, fifth is median family income, sixth is population and last is number of households.
