I will give you credit that racism, intolerance, prejudice, and homophobia are all still alive and well around these parts. I hear people call one another f*gs and say "that's so gay" all the time in casual conversation, not realizing how derrogatory these remarks can be. I've heard some VERY nasty things said about Hispanics, especially in the Hazleton area. I've also heard some nasty things said about African-Americans.

Isn't that the case most places? There is always a segment of the pop that will always include racism and prejudices. Especially in a sleepy rural town that went from .5% minority pop to 10+% in a decade or so.
Williamsport has many issues, it also has many positive things going for it. It's about 10 years behind much of the rest of the country but is a good safe place to raise a family. Housing prices don't move up or down much but a 2000 sq ft home in a good neighborhood will run as low as $110k. The rudeness level is similar to most places I've lived (25 different cities to date) except for a couple deep south locations where Southern Hospitality is alive and well.
If you are young and wanting nightlife it's scarce but what is here, live music and such is better than average. If you are looking for a high paying job head elsewhere. If you can live here and do business other places it's very good.
All in all Williamsport is just like anywhere else, has some good and some bad. Whether you enjoy it here depends on what you are looking for and need.

After reading through this thread, I am appalled that posts such as yours are even accepted on this forum.
It is one thing to state one's opinion in an open, diplomatic way; it is quite another to be bigoted, snobbish and cruel. I don't think that you have been missed in Williamsport.
Have a good Sunday, everyone.

Hey guys--I'm also thinking about moving to the Williamsport Area, more specificly, to the east and south (Montoursville, Muncy, Milton). I'm intreauged by the extremely contrasting oppinions about the place. I'm guessing that this area could be good or bad depending on your tastes and expecially what you make of it.
I'm probably not going to move to Williamsport itself, but I may be getting a job near the Lycoming Mall near Muncy, so I'll be looking for a place around there. The furthest south I want to go is Milton (for gas expense), I'm open to anywhere else in a 10-to-15 mile radius of the Mall. Within those areas, what would you recommend for someone who is unlikely to make more than $9 an hour and lives alone?

Muncy would be less expensive than Montoursville, but you'll have to watch out for flood zones. Since you're single and schools aren't an issue Milton would be okay, but there is more crime there than the other two. I grew up in Montoursville so I'm partial to there over Muncy, but there aren't a lot of rentals and trying to afford a mortgage on $9 an hour may be tough.

I agree with the last post. I grew up in Montoursville and now live in a Metropolitan area in the south. I would not move back. It has gone downhill. I do not think you get a good perspective on how Williamsport holds up against other cities until you have moved away for a while. I was awaken by how rural and behind the time Williamsport really is. Jessie Bloom should be sooo proud.....LOL. THe only thing I really miss is my family. I wish it was better so I could go home but I just want more for my kids.

What crime in Milton? There isn't anymore crime in Milton then there is Muncy or Montoursville! I've lived here for 20 + yrs, and its safe to go for walks at midnight! Rents are anywhere from 350 & up depending on whats included, n how many rooms etc...
For the whole Williamsport crime thing, what people aren't mentioning is how all the crime came to be in Williamsport. in the early 90's Drug Rehab Homes were opened all over the city to bring in money(thanks Jesse Bloom), great short time idea, but for the long term not so good. Cause u get people coming in from major cities to be w/ their loved one while they recover, find they like it & stay, thus bringing more families n friends in. Some of them not so good to have or u have relapsing people looking for drugs, n somebody has to fill the need. N down the toilet went the city. Don't want to be racist bigoted or whatever, but thats what the long-term Williamsport residents feel. Now they have a new mayor, who is trying to clean up & bring in businesses. N I believe that a lot of the drug rehabs have closed. But like any other city in America, Williamsport has its fair share of all kinds of issues.

not recommend Williamsport
I would not recommend moving to Williamsport. I too moved here from a large city and have been here about 7 months. I am be moving back west where I moved from very soon. If you would like to move somewhere smaller than where you live now this is not the place. The amount of crime for such a small area is shocking. Also the amount of young girls with babies is astonishing as well. Too much trash and no culture. Also the job market is horrible.
