In the Northeast I see "Spanish Food" more often than in the West. In the West they normally say Mexican, Colombian, Cuban, and Spanish means European food.

My theory is that with a much smaller percentage of the local population being Latino, and a significant portion of the Latino population being Puerto Rican (often 2nd-4th generation on mainland), they seem not to want to exclude any potential customers. The non-Latino population seems to think of Spanish speaking people without any distinction.

A surprising number of people think that Spanish (European) food is spicy.
