Default Hotel?

I'll be flying out to do rental hunting in a month or so, and I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel. Not looking to go broke, but I'd like something in a safe area. Ideally, I'd like something close to the water, but if it isn't budget, I'm perfectly fine wherever. Maybe in the Millcreek Mall area? Any suggestions are happily welcomed! Thanks.

The Sheraton is on the bay, but it's not cheap and fills up especially on weekends. The Avalon Hotel is downtown, on 10th Street. There also the Spencer House and Boothby B&Bs just west of downtown, if that interests you. The Glass House Inn on West 26th Street sounds interesting. There is a cluster of hotels/motels around West Eighth Street and Peninsula Drive; the nicest is probably the Clarion.

Tons of places to stay out by the mall; Google your favorite hotel chain and you'll find it. I don't know much about which is nicer than the other, I don't have to stay in hotels when I'm in Erie because "Chez Mom" is still open.

An off-the-wall suggestion is the Lighthouse Inn, about four miles east of downtown and about a block from the lake. It's a 1950s brick "motor inn"-style place in Lawrence Park (and just a few blocks from Chez Mom ), and I've heard it's pretty nice, from my high school classmates who stayed there for our reunion last summer. Another lakeside motel, but farther east out among the vineyards so you might not want that, is Lakeview on the Lake, which has motel rooms and cottages.

Good luck with your move! That will be a real nice time to move to the area.

Default Hotels

Thanks for the recommendations Ohiogirl! And for the well wishes Killer. Now I'm getting a little stressed about finding a place, but ah well...we'll make it work! We might be enjoying a hotel for a few weeks while we find a place when we get there.

Id also like to mention Edinboro. Its a small college town but very safe at that located 14 miles south of the Millcreek Mall. Lots of big homes out here, but that may due to the fact that many residents who live out here ae connected with the University in some way.

I hope you like Erie. It is an absolute wonderful underrated city. For a city of only 100,000 people it has "SO" much to do. Presque Isle is obviously a given. Its what Erie is most known for. Its a 13 mile piece of land that juts into the lake. On one side you have boating, hiking, biking, and roller blading and it offers a great view of Erie's skyline and on the other side is 13 miles of public beaches. I think this might be one of the only inland beaches in the country. There are I believe 12 separate beaches spread across the 13 mile piece of land. Its a must in the summer and I know several people who spend everyday there. It does get rather crowded at times though as it is Pennsylvania's most visited state park.

Also we have the Millcreek Mall which is the fourth largest mall in the USA by total square feet. We also have Splash Lagoon which is the largest indoor water park on the east coast as well as Waldameer Park and Water World, a local amusement park and water park next to Presque Isle. Waldameer is actually one of the country's oldest amusements parks and it has plenty of rides suitable to people of all ages including a wooden roller coaster that was voted the best new roller coaster in 2010 I believe. We also have an absolutely beautiful zoo that is free of charge every Sunday afternoon.

Another thing Erie is underrated for is its Italian restaurants. There are so many around here with great Italian food. Stay away Olive Garden though. Having a large Italian population here, there are several authentic family owned Italian restaurants. I suggest you try a pepperoni ball since I recently found out these are a local treat. We also have a great casino, horsetrack/racing track, and there is no sales tax on clothes in PA. So many people outside the state come here to shop given our mall is huge.

If you don't mind a bit of snow I'd also recommend Edinboro. It's a short drive from the "city" and is a wonderful place to raise children. Crime is practically non-existent save for petty stuff associated with the college kids. The college is a great resource too as the library is enormous and there's always something going on in the campus theaters and you don't have to be a student to participate. And also because of the college the town has a lively vibe (although it does tend to be rather sleepy in summer) as you have a mix of ages and nationalities.

For your budget you'd be able to buy a really lovely home with a huge yard in the area. I'm actually looking to buy a house myself in Edinboro at the moment but available homes don't grow on trees and that says a lot about what a desirable place to live it is.

Edinboro is a very nice place and I love Flip's Cafe and many areas around Edinboro Lake, but it can be a tough drive in the winter if you are commuting to the city every day.

Flip's is so good, many of us Edinboro students pefer to eat there over our own dining halls which says a lot about the food that the campus provides to us. Uck. lol And as for the snow, yeah it is bad out here. Edinboro gets the most snow in the state but honestly anyone from this region knows how to put up with it, we've been doing it our whole lives. The snow is bad but the crime is virtually non-existant. I lived in downtown Erie for ten tears growing up and I would never feel comfortable going for a walk alone in the nighttime there. But In Edinboro I can go for a walk at 3am and not think twice about it.

Where did you live/frequent in downtown Erie? I walk around downtown Erie all the time at night and have never felt unsafe. I am not arguing or disagreeing, just wondering what the issue was and where. I mainly spend time at the Tap House, Brew Erie, Plymouth, Starbucks, Art Museum, etc. that are all downtown on State Street and I have even walked/biked home pretty late without any issues.
