I grew up there and moved away for better job opportunities and a change of scenery. It is, however, a nice place to grow up. If I were you, I'd definitely look in the Pottsville and Blue Mountain school districts. You're more likely to find what you're looking for in the Blue Mountain district -- maybe look in areas like New Ringgold or outside of Orwigsburg? Or.. East Brunswick (?) township? (along route 443 between Orwigsburg and New Ringgold). Don't rule out Pottsville, though. Take a look and see what you find. Good luck!
As far as Cabela's -- that's in Berks County. And Centralia is in Columbia County.

There are large land plots in Pine Grove Township and Tremont Township. The Pine Grove Area School District is decent although Pottsville and Blue Mountain are both much better.

I love Schuylkill County, and frankly McAdoo is a pretty violent little town according to the police blotter. Southern Schylkill County is beautiful, affordable and family oriented. I'm not a native, but chose to raise my family here and never regretted it! Tremont, Pine Grove, Hhegins and Valley View are great little towns within shouting distance of each other. Good luck!

Hi, my husband and I grew up in Schuylkill County...he is a realtor and can help!
If you are still looking to relocate, my husband is a great realtor and would love to help you find the 10 acres you're looking for! You can go to his website (it's mainly cabins but he does other real estate as he is a Coldwell Banker agent) but you'll be able to learn more about him and email him directly if you are interested!

Left schuylkill county in 2006
I moved to schuylkill county in 2004.It was exciting at first mainly because of the scenery and the lower rents there.I traveled through many towns during that time and wasnt so impressed as the years went on.I found that most people wouldnt bother to become friends and hardly any1 would even say hi but if you needed help with something they were willing to.
Pottsville was quiet to live except when there were fires the fire whistle
would sure wake things up.I found the most ignorant thing about it was
when i had to take parking spaces on the streets 1 put bricks at my tires and 1 smeared my door handle cause i must of taken a space outside some1s house.A police officer told me there were neighborhood wars over parking in some parts of the city. The area doesn't like change and the
attitudes are different there. That I can't explain. But other towns seemed to be more friendly. My favorite towns were Tamaqua,Ashland and Auburn.
Also schuylkill county is abounding in wildlife and I found many places to work on my car without the bs of doing some minor work.Overall it is fun to be out in the country seeing wildlife as this county has an abundance.
I hope that county will improve with a better quality of life to live especially in the city of Pottsville.Think hard about moving there its not
doing well with quality of services and it is economically depressed.

There are a lot of dirt-cheap rowhomes in need of rehabilitation to be found in many of these old coal towns, but the surrounding townships offer a nice array of housing styles. If you want to be within commuting distance to Reading, then the Deer Lake or Orwigsburg areas would fit your bill. Pine Grove is within commuting distance to Harrisburg. McAdoo is within commuting distance to Hazleton. Good luck!

Scran-Barre doesn't live in Schuylkill County, but travels through it. He lives in the Scranton area. No offense scran-Barre, your ok in my book. However with that being said, I, on the other hand have raised my family here, and although not a native, feel comfortable in my choice of towns to live in (Tremont). My kids were able to afford housing here, and it's great to have them close by. Because of the low cost of living, it affords all of us the opportunity to do more things including travel, etc. i know of a good couple of fixer uppers if your so inclined, at reasonable prices here in town. All a short walk to the town pool, baseball field, the Theatre cafe', and Mancinos Pizza! Hope this helps your decision on relocation, I've never been sorry- A native New Englander

I wouldn't go to Tamaqua, I grew up right outside of the town, I lived right on the Tamaqua and Blue Mountain school district line right off of 443, I went to Tamaqua in Middle school and High school. It keeps getting worse and worse, drugs no jobs, they have cheap housing but only if you have tons of money to fix up the house because they are in horrible shape, not saying there are not any good houses in Tamaqua. There are some great one but most are not, outside of the town is great, I grew up in West Penn township and loved it here, it would be perfect in your looking for a place out of town but still close for work and shopping, but I would stay clear of Tamaqua.
