Relocate To Schuylkill County (Help)
My family and I are looking to relocate to an area in Schuylkill county. We are undecided on what towns to start looking for land/home. We would like a home or land with 10+ acres, and for the town to have a good school district. Any opinions on the pros/cons and the different characteristics of the different towns would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

hi grew up here and left for about 12 years work in berks , moved back good place for kids and peace and quiet friendly neighborhoods but i am a local...so that might matter some places...much much cheaper to live... but as sad fact you must commute because there is no work in the area that pays anything

Routes 61 and 183 get clogged with traffic with people commuting down to Reading and Wyomissing to work. But land and houses are cheap in Schuylkill, the cheaper the farther north you go. Unemployment is high for the area and there's not much shopping, but again the drive to Reading is not too bad distance wise.

Pottsville seems to be making a comeback as of late with a lot of new aesthetic streetscape improvements, the revival of the old Maroons restaurant, the restoration of an old theater, and a few other bright points. Unfortunately much of Schuylkill County remains more or less "old economically-depressed coal country," and that can be evident in towns that have been hit hard over the years, like Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, McAdoo, Schuylkill Haven, and Tamaqua (although this town appears to be coming back slowly as well). There are a lot of dirt-cheap rowhomes in need of rehabilitation to be found in many of these old coal towns, but the surrounding townships offer a nice array of housing styles. If you want to be within commuting distance to Reading, then the Deer Lake or Orwigsburg areas would fit your bill. Pine Grove is within commuting distance to Harrisburg. McAdoo is within commuting distance to Hazleton. Good luck!

LOL- we all would like 10 acres. If you want land -be prepared to buy a farm. The Amish have bought up land here-=pushing up prices. Anything modest on land is grabbed up FAST.

i personally love schuylkill county. the scenery is nice and it is not to crowded, however there is alot of police corruption, and more development (CABELAS)that indicates schuylkill county may not be a great place to live anymore

Cabela's is in Berks County, just south of the Schuylkill COunty line. Most of the dovelopment that Cabela's has brought has been in Hamburg, Berks County. Furthermore, I have not noticed any police corruption in much of Schuylkill County and it is a very pretty place to see and live in.
