what's wrong w/ quakertown?
I was born and raised in Quakertown, as was the majority of my (paternal) family. My generation has all left because the town, sadly nothing too great to start, has really deteriorated over the past 10-20 years. If there had been a decent general plan for preservation and development back then, I'd bet it would be a great place to live and raise a family. But that didn't happen. Unfortunately, there's been unfettered development (at least in Milford and Richland townships) without any particular plan or pattern, resulting in almost exculsively higher density -lower cost housing to get short term tax revenues. The obvious result of that is increased pressure on the schools which were always marginal at best. Traffic and congestion are poorly controlled, and I see no plans to correct them or even slow the deterioration. Last week, when I visited my mother at my childhood home on a rural road, I noted the presence of new developer stakes in the few remaining fields, I'm sure to put up too many "semi-detached houses" or the equivalent. I used to love the area, but now only feel heartsick when I return. Sorry if this is harsh, but the memory from the recent trip is still fresh.
The exception is the Haycock area, where poorer accesibility has slowed development enough to allow some preservation. That being said, Haycock is about 15 minutes (or more, these days) from the turnpike, so add that to a 40 mile commute to center city philadelphia. If I were moving back to the area, I'd much sooner consider Souderton/ Perkasie / Harleysville / Lansdale. I can't imagine choosing Quakertown, unfortunately.
