Default help with heating prices

We are buying our first home, settling Dec. 21st. Since our heat is included in our rent, I don't know how much to budget for heating oil. We currently in a 100 yr. old rowhouse that has two units. I've seen oil bills from last winter, but they're no gauge to our new propery. The house is a 1260 sq. ft. Cape style on a slab (no basement) that was built in the mid-1950's. It has newer vinyl siding and replacement windows. The second story consists only of two bedrooms and some storage.

Any idea how much it might cost to heat?

Actually the bills from the last year are a good indication. Just use the amount of oil purchased and calculate with the new price of oil. You can also call a few companies and ask them what they think, they probably have charts and tables that would give you a ball park estimate.

The bills I've seen are for the rental property we are in now, not for the new property. Sorry, I should have explained that more clearly. At this time I don't know what the present owner has paid for heating our new place.

I would ask them also, but keep in mind it will really depend on a lot of factors. Like how hot or cold they keep the house.

You can't get an exact amount. You can call the oil place and ask if they will tell you how often oil was purchased.

How big is your oil tank?

I have a 1200 square foot house (with leaky windows that are being replaced in two weeks! Hooray!) and a 200-gallon tank.

I use about 2 1/2 tanks -- 700 to 800 gallons -- a season, keeping the thermostat at 67 during the day and 62 at night.
