Would appreciate any feedback on life in State College for boomer professionals (who happen to also be alumni). Considering relocation and life as a boomer and a professional will surely be very different from student days so would like to hear from those who are living there and who fit this profile.

Are there opportunities to volunteer either with the university or in town and if so, what types of opportunities exist? While I know State College is a wonderful place to raise small children, what is it like if your children are grown? What is the local business community like for entrepreneurs? Would it be considered to have an "edge" when it comes to business people (similar to Boulder, for example)?

Any insights appreciated.

If you have in mind to relive your youthful college days, I think that you will be disappointed. State College is unrecognizable to me. The town has grown too big and so has the campus. The students also appear different. I'd rather remember it as it was 50 years ago, when the first baby boomers arrived.

There are volunteer opportunities.
This search has a lot of the big ones, plus there's Centre Peace.

I can't speak for the business community, other than saying that obviously if you have something that college students want, you probably have a pretty good market for what you have to sell. Also, as you say, there are young families there, and a decent number of retirees as well.

State College is a pretty laid back, comfortable place. If you have a strong loyalty to Penn State University, there's a good chance you'd enjoy it, of course --- depending on where you're coming from and what kind of a place you like to live in. It's a small sleepy town, which happens to have a world class university at it's "Centre".
