FMC Tower at Cira Centre South had it's "official" ceremonial groundbreaking yesterday and will now rise 49 floors and 730 feet. 6th tallest in the city of Philadelphia for now, but will be bumped down to 7th once the new Comcast Tower is complete. This building will feature over 600,000 sq ft of office space and 268 luxury apartments:

Lastly, an expansion will start this summer for Penn Medicine's PCAM South Tower which is currently under construction. Currently at 11 floors and 180 feet, the expansion will bring the total height to 16 floors and 302 feet.

With all the extra housing around campus I wonder if the students will reside on campus more instead of rittenhouse now.

I can't really speak for Drexel, but I can tell you that a clear (though by no means overwhelming) majority of off-campus Penn undergrads stick to U City. Among grad students, there's a more even split.

Oakland Gateway Ventures development apartment project for South Oakland - Pittsburgh Business Times

Quote:
A development group called Oakland Gateway Ventures LP has assembled a block of 11 residential properties in South Oakland and is putting together a plan to redevelop the larger site into a new apartment project.

“They’re planning a pretty significant-scale development,” said Wilson.

The plan comes after Oakland Gateway has acquired 11 neighboring properties comprising a small block bordered by Boulevard of the Allies as well as Bates, Zulema and Coltart streets, a rectangular stretch of properties that backs onto a small city park.

The demand for apartments in Oakland couldn't be much stronger. A panelist at an Urban Land Institute event last week said apartment vacancy in a combined territory of Oakland and Shadyside was 1.8 percent.

that intersection could be put to a better use. That area has a lot if traffic sovvisibility will not be an issue. I hope the complex rivals the Bakery Squarw complex. Those apartments turned out better than expected.

That picture brings back some great memories of the years I competed in the Penn Relays when I was younger. The history and tradition of the event is unrivaled it is nice to see the surrounding neighborhood thriving.

That is just central Oakland, but there is also North Oakland and West Oakland. all of them are part of the main university area in Pittsburgh, they have a combined roughly 22,000 population in less land area than U City. the population density for U City may be a bit higher , but is generally on par with Oakland depending on which tracts you choose. Also, the university area in Pittsburgh has extended into parts of Shadyside for a long time (and Carnegie Mellon U is partially in Shadyside). So its not easy to compare based on neighborhood statistics because the main university area in Pgh isn't defined by one specific neighborhood. although many people just call the whole area Oakland for simplicity.

The bulk of CMU's campus, including almost all of its dorms, are actually in Squirrel Hill North, not Oakland or Shadyside.
