Hey all,

I am Canadian and live in Canada but I have thought about re-locating to the USA.

I got some great friends in PA and I live in a small town and just went through a divorce. Small town, small community, etc. I need a new start somewhere.

I got a good job here and house but that is all.

I know it wouldn't be easy to just pick up and move to the USA, need a job, work permit, etc.

Any tips?

Check out the website below for info on legally residing in the USA. As a Canadian, you can visit the USA but you are not allowed to work or live permanently.

Canadians in USA: Information About U.S. Visas, Green Cards, Citizenship and More

I'd check out B.C. and Alberta before trying your luck in PA.

Maybe Curious_Canadian already lives in B.C. or Alberta?

Pennsylvania and Upstate New York are very similar in many respects.

Both have larger cities and metropolitan areas (i.e. NY's Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, Albany/Schenectady/Troy, etc. vs. PA's Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton, Harrisburg, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, etc.)

Both have resort areas (i.e. NY's Finger Lakes, Catskills, Adirondacks, Niagara Falls, Thousand Islands, etc. vs. PA's Poconos, Amish Country, the "Wilds", Erie County, U.S. Route 6 Heritage Corridor, etc.)

Both have residents that like to complain a lot about everything while not realizing just how good they have it compared to many other areas (far too many "sky is falling" whiners on these forums).

Both have four variable seasons of weather (with winters being the most extreme in the Adirondacks and near the Great Lakes while summers are most hot and humid in Southeastern and South Central PA).

I bring Upstate NY into the conversation because assuming you live in Ontario or Quebec currently (not sure why you'd pick Pennsylvania at random if you lived in Alberta or Manitoba, for example) it might be better to at least start your foray in the U.S. nearer to the border in case you become homesick or change your mind about permanently settling here.

What sort of activities do you enjoy?
Would you be looking to rent or buy, and what would a rough estimate be of your budget for either?
Do you want bucolic countryside, newer suburbia, an established older "streetcar" suburb, or a walkable city enivronment?
What do you do for a living?

A lot of Canadians like the Grove City area, about an hour north of Pittsburgh and an hour south of Erie, 45 minutes east of Youngstown. The Prime Outlets seem to be a prime draw.

A lot of nice little towns up that way, Volant and New Wilmington, Amish. Nice area of the state.

Good job and a house but that is all? Stay put. Who could ask for anything more? Other than the beautiful scenery of Canada. Outdoor opportunities. Health care. Hockey. Cross Country or downhill skiing. Snowmobiling. Hunting. Aurora Borealis. The Guess Who said what's what about America.

If you still want to move, you should talk to these great friends and see what they think of your idea. Would they know of any job leads? Could they help you in your move? Are their towns really any better than yours? Go and visit them. Take a good look at Pennsylvania up close.
