Default Hi, I'm a newbie!

Hi, all. I just found this wonderful forum site. I wanted to introduce myself. As I have time I'll be checking the previous posts and hopefully will be able to contribute some useful information.

I live just outside Selinsgrove, PA. I grew up in Montoursville, graduating in 1980. My husband and I have been married 25 years. At one time we owned a campground in central PA. That was tons of fun, but we burnt out and moved on. Now my husband fixes forklifts (what he did before the campground) and I'm an independent transcriptionist, doing work over the Internet and for local municipal agencies. I just love my work!!

We have three great kids, boy age 13, girl age 7 and boy age 5. We love central PA (except for winter ). If you have any questions about our area I'd be happy to help you out.

"See" you soon!

Dawne

Default Selinsgrove

Hi, Storminateacup. Here's what I posted on another thread about Selinsgrove:

I think you can't go wrong with Selinsgrove, or the surrounding communites that feed into Selinsgrove schools. Some of these include Kratzerville (where I actually live), Shamokin Dam (where the Kmart and Hoss's are), and Hummels Wharf (also known as Monroe Township - where the mall and Scheetz are).

As an independent transcriptionist I type the minutes for the meetings of several organizations in Selinsgrove. I am VERY excited about the positive changes that are coming up in the Borough. Some of these include an improved boat launch facility on the Isle of Que, the reopening of the community ice skating rink, a fitness trail that was added at the town park/playground, and the beginning of a Main Street Manager program to improve the downtown (which is quaint and cute as is, but could use some "oomph").

The schools are fantastic and crime is low. As with any rural area on the "pipeline" between Harrisburg and Williamsport, there are some drug issues, but it's not an "in-your-face" problem. Most of the crime that you'll hear about involves college students who live off campus - parties, drunkenness, disturbances at night, even a few rapes recently, but they were all college-related. The Borough police are efficient and very good at their jobs. They have help when needed from surrounding communities, and the Selinsgrove State Police are just outside of town.

Transportation in the area will be improved within the next ten years or so as a new thruway is being built to connect Route 147 to Route 15. It will bypass "the strip" (where the restaurants and stores are), which will cut down on congestion. Our area is growing, with new stores coming soon and new restaurants springing up all the time.

The climate is usually humid, summer and winter. We have hazy summer days and cold, damp winter days. Our snowfall lately has been below average, but that can change at any time. Rainfall is about average, but be careful if you locate near a stream, creek or river. Find out about flooding before committing to anything.

This is a growing and exciting area to be in, now and in the future.

In my opinion, Selinsgrove is the place to be!!

I concur with Dawne's opinion. My best childhood friend is now in his second year of college at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, and he's loving every minute of it! Although small-town life is a bit too "boring" for my tastes (I yearn to live right in Downtown Scranton in the upcoming years amid the hustle and bustle), you're still only about 45 minutes to an hour from both Williamsport and Harrisburg for access to a wider range of nightlife, shopping, etc. via Route 15. Lewisburg, with its quaint downtown and thriving artist community surrounded by Bucknell University, is only about 20 minutes north of Selinsgrove.

I've only driven through the area once, but I had nothing but positive impressions about the region! The Shamokin Dam/Hummels Wharf area was a bit ugly with its gas stations, fast-food restaurants, chain stores, etc. lining Route 15, but I guess every town has to have its "sprawlish" neighborhoods. My parents spent a romantic weekend last year in Historic Lewisburg for some sort of sidewalk crafts festival event thing-a-majigger, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves; many of the townspeople seemed shocked that people from as far away as Scranton had actually learned about how attractive their community truly is! (And apparently the word is out, since I belive "StormInaTeacup" is one of about three who have inquired recently about the Central Susquehanna Valley).

Welcome Dawne! I consider myself a Newbie also. Just what is an independent transcriptionist? When my husband and I eventaully relocate, we will both have to find jobs. He can probably transfer to a local Home Depot and I'll find office work somewhere. Maybe in a hospital or school setting. Currently working in a school as an administrative assistant.

An independent transcriptionist means that I work for myself and have to pay my own taxes. I work with two online companies and for two municipal groups. They pay me but don't deduct taxes. The online companies have set fees I adhere to. For the municipal groups I set my own hourly rate and bill them.

You can PM me if you'd like more detailed information.

Good luck in your move.
