There's not much point to that. Erie doesn't have much in the way of oil or petrochemical refineries. The gas from the Marcellus and Utica Shales can be piped to existing refineries near Philadelphia. It's why they're building new pipelines to Marcus Hook. Besides, the Port of Philadelphia and others nearby are much closer to the Atlantic Ocean than the Port of Erie is, and also better able to handle the large vessels needed to export the gas.

Yeah I am not sure Erie would be a great shipping port for natural gas or chemicals, but iron ore and grain could be transported in much larger quantities on Lake Erie and specifically the Port of Erie is in a great spot to transport those items effectively.
