Thanks. I just did a search on this and the house I was interested in is right across the street from those apartments! Not for me!
Thank you!

I think just about anywhere in Lebanon or Lancaster county would be safely within 2 hours of Philly. In Lebanon County, check out:
Annville/Cleona and townships surrounding
South of Lebanon (West Cornwall, South Lebanon, and North Cornwall Townships)
Myerstown/ELCO (small, nothing really to do, but decent)
Palmyra and South Londonderry Twp

I've been to Lebanon several times, and I was never impressed by it. It reminded me a lot of Hazleton, PA, a city that is likewise "boring" (as some others described) and has some crime issues. When I did some "official" research, I found out that Hazleton and Lebanon are indeed "Twin Cities" in many aspects, which would lead me to steer you clear of Lebanon.
Lebanon
Pop. 24,180 (2006)
Median Household Income: $27,259 (2000)
Pop. Below Poverty Line: 16.2% (2000)
Hispanic Pop.: 16.4% (2000)
Pop. Aged 25+ With High School Diploma: 71.4% (2000)
Pop. Aged 25+ With Bachelor's Degree: 8.6% (2000)
Hazleton
Pop. 22,037 (2006)
Median Household Income: $28,082 (2000)
Pop. Below Poverty Line: 14.2% (2000)
Hispanic Pop.: 4.9% (2000)
Pop. Aged 25+ With High School Diploma: 78.5% (2000)
Pop. Aged 25+ With Bachelor's Degree: 11.5% (2000)

Lebanon has a decent farmers market and a vibrant downtown during the day with some new restaurants and bars, but other then that the city overall isn't in very good shape.

I heard that Reading is very, very high crime. Much worse than Lebanon.

It’s all in what you like. I much prefer Lickdale, Jonestown, Fredericksburg, Myerstown, Newmanstown, and ********stown to anything Lebanon City has to offer.
If you’re on a fixed income, have a car, and you don’t have to work, you may want to check out Schuylkill County. It’s even cheaper than Lebanon County.
Lebanon County: As a general rule, the further south you go, the more expensive it is. Up in the northern part, it’s the cheapest.
It seems like many people have skimmed over the topic starter’s questions. If he cannot afford Lancaster, he’s never going to be able to afford Hershey…
If crime’s a concern and you must be in a city, try Pottsville.

I Work In Lebanon And Am Thinking Of Moving To The Lebanon Area. I Have Been Doing Lots Of Research, Asking Lots Of Questions To The People That Live There.... South Lebanon Is Nice, Cornwall Too... Plus The Taxes Are A Lot Lower Than Where I Live Now... Good Luck!

i grew up in lebanon and my parents thought nothing of letting me walk to the playgrounds, friends houses, schools, etc.. however when i came back in 1997 after being away since 1985 i have to tell you everything changed and none of it for the better. the area looks seedier, the people look rougher, and the crime was more extensive i was so uncomfortable i never let my children leave my sight. it took me a long while but we are finally out of lebanon and i am happier and i feel safer. don't waste your time in lebanon it is not worth the hassle aand possibly your safety. leave it to the hoods that are moving in. uptown revilitization is nice but driving through the rest of town to get there is risky and referring to an earlier comment yes the locals are concerned about what is happening to their town that is why they are leaving in droves! in just one block you can find four or more houses for sale. schuykill county is a good choice as is berks county but stay away from lebanon county

My daughter has lived in Lebanon, Elizabethtown, and Hershey. Of the 3, she likes Hershey the best. She couldn't wait to move out of Lebanon, and after visiting her a few times, we could see why. I personally prefer E-town, my wife and I have considered moving there when we retire.
