Move to Middletown, PA....suggestions? (Harrisburg, Lebanon: houses, to buy, college)

Hi. I just got a promotion at my job in Harrisburg (capitol building). My boyfriend and I are looking to buy a house in a nice area near the city. I have a 35 mile commute to work and that hour drive isn't fun.

We're looking for a nice area with some open area (country) but without being far removed from things to do (shopping, etc).

Several friends suggested Middletown since it's 15 miles from Harrisburg.

Does anyone know if Middletown is a good area? We'd be looking for a house that's between $100,000-$150,000 with no close neighbors (he hates developments). I'm not sure if we'll be able to find something or where to look. I

The only part of Middleton I know is right near the airport, which makes you in the jet path of planes all hours of the day. I'm not sure if there are any developments with land, the only part of Middletown I'm familiar with is a main drag and a side street full of row houses. Not a particularly attractive community, in my opinion. Your budget doesn't seem high enough for property with land, so you might have to rethink that idea.

Middletown is a good but not great-looking town IMO. You aren't getting any huge tracts of land without neighbors in Middletown proper, but you should be able to find something like what you want in Londonderry or Conewago Townships. These two townships are southeast/east of Middletown and are very rural. The more rural township, Conewago, is further from Harrisburg, but is also directly between Hershey and Elizabethtown.

If you want something kind of similar but in a different direction from Harrisburg, I suggest checking out Monroe Township in Cumberland County; this township is a short distance west of Mechanicsburg. You could also look in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County (or East Hanover Twp, Lebanon County); that township is located a few miles north of Hershey.

If this is not too late, you might also want to consider the area around Hummelstown.

I would suggest the Hummelstown area as well. Middletown isn't the best place - it's okay when you first move here, but it gets really old after a while... Lots of college students and some very run down areas...

The area between Hummelstown and Hershey might fit some of your criteria. Lower Swatara Township, which is just adjacent to Middletown, does have some newer housing but may be a bit too densely populated for you.
