They're still there!

I drive U.S. Route 22 frequently between Pittsburgh and State College to visit a friend who is a Penn State professor. Last winter I had the misfortune of driving to see her on not one, but on two late nights where there were snow storms. I remember being near the Dishong Mountain Road exit and barely being able to see a half-car-length in front of me. I eventually noticed the yellow lights of a PennDOT plow/salt truck and was ever so grateful to follow him (or her) as a beacon for a few miles until they exited. I had my hazard lights on and was driving 25 miles per hour. The only other vehicles on the road were literally tractor-trailers (that would blow past me in the passing lane and fling slop onto my windshield) or PennDOT vehicles. On both occasions the drives took me an extra hour overall.
