To me, Western PA felt alot like New England (especially North New England like Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) while Eastern PA except for Philly felt like the newer kind of areas you see more in the Midwest, South, and West.

With the exception of Philadelphia, I feel PA is a state where you're going "west" when you go east, but then it really feels "East" again once you cross into New Jersey.

Are you just talking about the mountains? Because I really don't see New England in Pennsylvania, and I've been to NE, many times.

I do not see the comparison, while there are distinct parts of the state and mentality, the James Carville quote about Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between, is very accurate and I'm a native of this area, but I don't fit the stereotype but I sure lived around it and still see it when visiting and I have lived in the South.

I always felt Pittsburgh was the gateway to the Midwest, things past State College always felt different as did things around Philly.

I don't know if you can necessarily generalize between Western and Eastern PA. I'm sure Pittsburgh feels different than Philadelphia which is different than Scranton which is different than Erie, etc...

People who live in the areas being compared will most likely disagree with you, but having lived all over PA and NE, I would agree to some extent . . . Example: Centre County PA is exactly like where I lived in VT.
But, really one could make comparisons to any area if they tried. I mean, someone could say rural Oregon is like rural Vermont.

Yes, I know it stings and I'm from that area but it's the closest generalization of a distinct % of the population but not 100%.

I think it's hilarious how natives live in denial, obviously many need to take off the blinders.

Rural is rural - doesn't really matter what state. And I don't mean that in a bad way. I grew up in a fairly rural area of lower Delaware, then moved to upstate NY. It was pretty similar. You drive a distance to shop, everyone knows each other in town, lots of people are related, etc. etc.
