I agree. Of course, finding jobs is very difficult here UNLESS you know someone. Like the old saying goes, "it's not what you know, it's WHO you know." You need to travel outside the county borders to get a good full-time job in either Blair, Mifflin, Centre, or even Bedford and Fulton. It's a typical hicktown where everyone knows everyone. So, what do you expect? The best places to go around here is the new Wal-Mart, a few restaurants like Pizza Hut and Hoss's, GIANT supermarket, and uh...that's about it. You have to travel at least 8 miles to find some better locally-owned restaurants like: Main Street Cafe and Paesano's in Alexandria; Top's Diner in Mill Creek. If you want an upscale restaurant, Mimi's is your place in Downtown Huntingdon. Coincidently, the building where Mimi's is located used to be a bar/hotel dive just like some of the bars we have in town currently. And we have a good portion of them. As for drugs, all over the place in the county, like Openless said.
All we have is nature, the mountains, and overhyped Raystown Lake. Plus, "Penn State wannabe" Juniata College. It's a perfect area to raise a family or to retire and live out the rest of the natural born days. But, as for working here and for entertainment value other than watching Huntingdon's religion of baseball and football (might as well include hunting and fishing), you need to go to Altoona and State College for that.
P.S. I was born and raised in Huntingdon County. So, I should know what's really going on here.

yeah, huntingdon is pretty much as you describe. my wife of 40 yrs is from there so that is how i learned about it. state college is a very cool town, esp for coffee shops and activities for your children. also, you have a neat town near there of altoona, pa. nice mall etc. you are not too awful far from pittsburgh pa, for major shopping or events, however, bottom line, huntingdon, pa is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. as you stated, pretty much it's all in what you want, and perhaps to consider any comutes to work etc. email me if you have any further quest. you do have juniata college in hungtingdon.

i was born in Huntingdon and my father was born in Newton Hamilton and he graduated from Mount Union High School. I lived in Huntingdon when I was young and remember visiting my relatives in Newton Hamilton/Mt Union when we lived near Philly. I have recently been back to Huntingdon and Mt Union area three times this decade. I miss it. I am coming back again for a visit in two weeks. I wish I could move back. Others have mentioned a commute of 30-45 miles for work. I drive that everyday and my job is only 12 miles away!! I drove from Huntingdon to Lewistown once and found it to be pleasant drive, but I wasn't on the road at commuting time. I think Huntingdon and surrounding area has a lot to offer. (My kids are grown so I don't have to worry about the drug issue as much as young parents. However, i believe that drugs are everywhere--no town is immune.)

Some INFO for you on Huntingdon
Hi Jennifer, we did the same thing you are trying to do back in 1996. So this info comes from the source! Huntingdon is a great town to settle down in if you are not the "city" type. There is alot more to do than the other members have told you! If your kids like motor sports, we have a motorcross track called Panther Hollow raceway that kids from 5 to 85 can ride in their class that suits their skill level, you can ride atvs or bikes. And we also have a dirt circle track called Heston Speedway that anyone with a old junker can pay a small fee and have alot of fun racing arround the track and dream that on day you will be racing Tony Stewart. And then there is the RC track for anyone with a remote controled car or truck can have some fun, and there is a club that has a air strip for RC planes and helis. Our town is growing and has a low crime rate. And as far as the drugs, its no different than any other small town, the most common would be pot. Oh and the biggest employer here is the two state prisons, and yes there is alot of construction work. My suggestion would be to stay away from the Mount Union area and southern huntingdon county because their schools are a mess! Both my wife and I where on the PTA and attended monthly mettings with the school and there were times that the police had to be called because parents were tired of the poor conditions and wanted things to change, and that ment the school would of had to spend some of their presious money to improve the conditions. But anyway, we love the area of Huntingdon and are very happy here. We live about 3 miles from Seven Points marina at Raystown lake. The marina is the largest in the state and offers alot of things to do. At the other end of the lake,25 miles away, there is another marina called The Resort, and that to is large and has a nice restourant in it. We also have a county fair once a year that offers different kinds of entertainment from demo derby to truck pulls to music concerts and plenty of food and games. We find every thing we need rite here in huntingdon, but if you want the city life, take a 30 min drive north to either Altoona or StateCollege. Well I hope that this helps you in your decision on the area. Good luck and maybe we will cross paths some day!

Hello Tcrew,
I just wanted to ask some questions about Huntingdon, I come here to visit my brother and I was curious about swimming here I am bringing 4 children with me and wonder how many public pools or waterparks are around. We love traveling here from Columbus, Oh, and really enjoy the serenity of the scenary, anyway, when we were here at Thanksgiving we went to Altoona and went through the Holiday Lights, had a great time. We also went on a train ride, it was okay. The kids loved it, so if you can suggest anything at all, it would be greatly appreciated, we stay on Route 22, we have stayed at the Comfort Inn but this time around it was full so we are staying a little past at Millstone Manor, what great food wow fantastic..............
Thanks
Nancy
